Prologue
A white she bear looked at two cubs nestled in her belly fur, suckling. She licked her mate's cheek. "Siku and Uumatik." Her mate nodded. "Imiq, they're perfect!" Imiq gazed at the male lovingly. "I know, Auq." Auq and Imiq stared blissfully at each other for a few moments, then Imiq rumbled happily. "They will grow up to be strong bears, just like their father." Auq growled jokingly back. "And they will grow up to be just as fast as their mother." Imiq and Auq nuzzled each other, and the same thought bobbed in both of their tranquil, peaceful minds. "I won't let anything hurt them."
Chapter 1
Kiinaq shook Iji's murmur from his head. "I won't freeze. Will I?" He mumbled as he pounded down the slope. Reaching the frozen camp, he padded to Imiq. "How is everyone?" Imiq looked neutral. "Nobody is badly injured, though Tonrar needs rest. I gave him lavender for his chill and hornwort for the graze by his shoulder. Ikima's shocked, but I gave her thyme. Everyone should be fine." Kiinaq nodded tersely. "Good. And I..." He decided to leave out the part about how he killed the pup. "Do I need herbs?" Imiq inspected his bloody pelt carefully. "No, just some cobwebs and horsetail." She chewed up a poultice and smeared it over his wounds. It stung, but after Imiq packed some snow with the cobwebs, they felt soothed. Kiinaq sighed as he curled up, nestled comfortably between the dense bracken packed around him like a nest. A thought came into his mind, but he pushed it away. "The warmth will freeze... That can't happen, can it?"
Chapter 2
A commotion outside his calm den startled and woke Kiinaq. Struggling groggily to his paws, Kiinaq stumbled sleepily out of the half light of his nest into the glare of the arctic sun. He gasped and staggered as he saw small white creatures darting into the frozen camp. Piercing amber eyes lit up the snow as the familiar beasts crowded around the bears that rushed out of their dens. Bears let out bellows of defiance and launched themselves forward. The white brutes nipped at his tribemates' paws and slid underneath before the angry bears could retaliate. As Imiq padded blearily out of her nest, Kiinaq held his breath. How would Imiq react?
Chapter 3
Imiq drew in her breath sharply, horrified at the sight. One of the foxes broke free from a tussle with Sila and narrowed his eyes, clumps of fur missing from his hindquarters. "Are you not mother of cubs me and Kak killed? Why, I would take you life too!" He sprang forth and held onto Imiq, his tiny claws pricking her skin. Imiq cried with fear as the fox's snapping jaws got perilously close to her throat. Kiinaq gave a deafening roar and plunged into the melee of battle. He slashed and clawed his way through the foxes and bears, that parted to let him pass, and he eventually reached the ruffled pair. Oddly enough, the ruler of the foxes had Imiq pinned. "Say hello to cubs for me!" He raised his paw, ready to deal the finishing blow. "No!" A tussled bundle of white fur reached the two before Kiinaq did. "Sila!" Kiinaq gasped. Sila rammed into the fox's side and heaved it against a slippery wall. Sila snarled at the dishonorable being. "I won't let you hurt my brother's mate!" The fox smirked, and dealt Sila a killing blow, slicing her open from head to tail.
Chapter 4
Imiq stared, stunned, as Kiinaq gaped at the fox. The fox licked the blood of his paw and looked at the barrier of eyes, even from his own group, casually. "I kill your Iji too, where she?" Faster then a seal taking a gulp of air, Kiinaq raced forward and pinned the fox. "Iji is dead." He croaked hoarsely, grief he hadn't felt for moons piercing through him like the pain from a thorn driven deep into his pad. The sun had turned blood red, it's russet and crimson hue giving Kiinaq strength. "The warmth will freeze..." He thought as his blood went cold. "Not in a bad way..." The sun had warmed up his tired, stiff muscles and he was ready for a fight. "I am her successor. Stop! I have your leader!" He added loudly to the remaining fighters. He hissed to the defeated fox. "You're finished." He unsheathed his sharp claws and punctured the brute's skin, creating a giant, fatal wound that looked like a red leaf placed on the beast's throat. He spasmed once, then lay still, the memory of his convulsive jerk fading away. Iji rumbled happily to him, relief in her wise murmur as the sun went bright yellow again, and it's golden rays warmed up Kiinaq's frozen veins. "Well done, my apprentice."
