CHAPTER ONE
The drinking was getting out of hand and I knew that
my mother wasn't safe in our house anymore. My brother
was getting out of hand with the drinking and the drugs,
that I wonder when he's just going to end up dead from an
over dose. I worry for my mother every time I get home from
school if I am going to find her crying or the house would be
destroyed because they had gotten into a fight. It was a constant
thing every day, and when it didn't happen, Daniel was
off getting high with his friends or he would decide
to pick and head out of town. When he did he would
be gone for months. My mother would worry about him
and I would have to tell her that he was never coming back.
When he did he claimed that he changed his ways.
Of course I never believed anything he said and like
a fool my mother believed him. No one in school knew
about what was going on, and I would prefer not say anything
to anyone. I tried to keep a smile on during school
so that no one knew what was going on in my life. The guy
that I can trust everything and he doesn't even know.
Shawn has always been there for me, but I don't want
my life to be his.
I made it to the house, hoping that I wouldn't find the house a mess
and my mother crying. I don't know if the neighbors here what goes on
but they must have. They fight pretty loud and they throw things too.
One night Daniel fired a gun at the cieling, so they must hear
it they just don't want to be part of anything. They are
only nosey when they feel lilke it. I walked into the house.
The door was open and I looked inside to see if the house was normal.
Well, actually I don't really know what normal is anymore.
There was silence, the house was clean and I didn't here my mother yelling
or crying about anything.
"Mom, where are you?!" I cried out. There was no answer and I
paniced. I dropped my backpack on the floor and searched the house for
her.
"Mom!!! Where are you?! Are you okay?" I cried out again.
She was no where in the house to be found. I didn't understand
what was going on. I am only 17 years old holding on an adult
resonsability. Instead of my mother taking care of me
I was taking care of her.
"Coudln't she at least left a note?" I thought.
Then I saw a car pull up into the drive way, I looked out
the window to see who it was. I watched the car back up again
and pull out of the drive way. Must have been someone
turning around. We lived at the end of a dead end street
and there was woods beyond that road. I never had gone back
there, my mother worries that there might be hobos back there.
I was getting fustrated now that I started crying.
There was no one to be found in the house and I felt so
lost. I didn't know whether to stay home and wait or go out looking
for her.
CHAPTER TWO
It was 7:30 p.m. and I decided to go over Shawn's house.
If they were coming home soon, they were going to come home to
an empty house. I knocked on Shawn's door and waited for
a few minutes. Shawn was 19 years old and lived on his own.
I know him because he's Tia's cousin. I thought he was cute, and I have
a small crush on him. I saw him look though the window and he opened the door as soon as he saw
me outside.
"Leyna, what are you doing here?" he asked.
"There's no one at my house and I was bored so I decided to
stop by. Are you busy?" I asked.
"No, come on in." he said as he closed the door behind him.
I sat down on the couch and he sat on the lazy boy. He looked at me,
and I smiled.
"So do you want anything to drink?" he asked.
"No thank you. Do you want to go some where? Or maybe we
can go and rent a movie. That's if you're not busy?"
"No of course not. Come on, we can go to the movies
instead." he replied.
"Really, but I don't have any money."
"That's okay. It's on me." he smiled and we were on our
way. I was happy with Shawn and with my friends, but so they wouldn't
worry about me I kept a happy face. I wanted to be strong for myself.
We were on our way to the movies. I looked out toward my window
trying not to cry. I was upset and I felt so lost at the moment.
"Leyna, are you okay? What are you thinking?" he asked.
"Nothing, just staring at the passerbys that's all. Why do you ask?"
"You seem upset about something, something you're not telling me."
"What are you talking about? I'm not hiding anything from you. You know I tell you everything."
I was lying to myself, but it was for his own good. I didn't want him to worry about me.
"Okay, if you say so." was all he said and continued driving. I had to keep a happy face
and I couldn't let him so how I really felt.
