A Summer Day Corey Moon
A cool breeze flowed through my window and touched my face, the sun came through and danced upon the walls of my room, I could hear the fountain in the back yard with its steady trickle of water. It was the first day of my Summer Vacation, I had many plans for the days to follow but nothing could have prepared me for the particular incident of today.
I got out of bed, I had a pair of flannel pajama bottoms on, and a white T-shirt, I put my slippers on and walked down stairs expecting to see my mom with breakfast ready. When I didn’t see her I wasn’t worried, I figured that maybe she stayed with her date last night and thought she was to drunk to drive. I decided the best option was to make some toast, and get something to drink before I investigated any further on where my mom could have been.
As soon as I sat down to eat my toast I heard the door bell ring, I figured it was my mom and she had just lost her keys, but to my surprise when I opened the door there was a man in a uniform asking if I was Johnny, Mary’s son, my first thought was not to tell this man anything, then I saw a badge proclaiming he was a police officer. I told the man I was her son and asked what this was about, he started explaining me my mom was in an accident, and that she was in the hospital. Right then the whole world seemed to stop, the morning was no longer beautiful and the wind seemed menacing rather then cooling, the sun no longer danced but beat down on me with its heat, and the constant trickle of water laughed at me.
The man in the uniform told me that he was to take me directly to the hospital, that my mom might not have much time, I was in a state of denial and wouldn’t let myself believe that my mom might not be here tomorrow, the man in the uniform tried to explain to me that my mom wasn’t going to look like herself, that she was almost unrecognizable, I asked the man what had happened and he told me that its was a car accident, he said that her boyfriend tried to drive her home but he was intoxicated, the roads were wet and he veered off the road into a ditch, but the car was going fast and my mom wasn’t wearing her seat belt, she never wore her seat belt and I always told her that she would regret it one day, it seems that day came sooner then I expected.
When we drove up to the hospital the man in the uniform told me what room my mom was in and that I should hurry to see her because she was just about to go into surgery. When I walked down the hallway to my mothers room everything seemed to be a blur nurses and doctors were running to and fro going to other patients in the hospital, I remember being angry that they weren’t in my mom’s room helping her, she was the one dying right?
When I was told that my mom was unrecognizable that was an understatement she didn’t look human, she had a machine hooked up to her that made a steady beeping sound as her heart pumped what little blood she had through her body, her face was wrapped in gauze and the only part of it showing were her eyes, and they were closed. Her hands and feet were bruised and bloody, it hurt me to even look at them, I wanted to hold her hand and tell her everything was going to be ok, but she didn’t look ok, I wanted to tell her that I love her but all that came out was a muffled breath, my eyes started to well up and I cried uncontrollably.
The doctors came in and told me I had to leave, that she was going into surgery and I couldn’t be there. I walked out of the room feeling guilty for leaving my mom’s side. When I stepped into the lobby of the hospital there wasn’t many people there, some parents, that brought their kids to the doctor, and some elderly waiting for their routine check up, I thought how my mom would never be able to grow old, and started to cry again. Nobody noticed me there and that was fine, I wanted to sit in the corner and cry without some idiot telling me everything was going to be “ok”.
It seemed that I had been sitting in the lobby for hours when I doctor finally came out to give me the report on my mom. He told me that the surgery went ok but he didn’t know how long my mom could last in the state she was in. He told me to pray for her. I had never prayed in my life and this stranger tells me that the best thing to do is pray?
I remember praying to god not to take my mom away from me to take me instead; I remember praying for her not to die. I remember asking why he was doing this, why was he taking her away from me? The more I prayed the more it seemed like my voice wasn’t being heard, like maybe my one and only wish was filed and put away for god or who ever listens, to look at some other day when it was too late.
I was told that I had to say goodbye to my mom. This wasn’t going to be “good bye mom, seeya after school” this was goodbye forever; it was hard to comprehend that I would never see my mother again. I walked into her room; death was lurking like a shadow over my mom. I held her hand and told her how much I love her, and how sorry I was that it wasn’t me that had been in the accident. I heard a long whining sound from the side of her bed and she was dead.

"I love it" -- Melyssa.
"Writing about death and religion are difficult topics when placed hand in hand. When death occurs, or when someone loses something they cherish, that is when true faith is tested. I applaud the way you concluded this story. You didn't tell the reader how the son felt in the end; you left the reader to decide how he handled his mother’s death. " -- Jalah Reid.
