A Little Piece Of Heaven
Lew Dallas

It was a warm summer day with puffy clouds in the
sky. The car bumped its way down the small dirt
road. Such a narrow road. Not much more than a
path. Tall weeds grew in from the sides of the
road and rubbed on the side of the car as it
crept along. The whole family was there;
mom, dad and brother. The dirt road continued for
about a quarter of mile and then opened into a
large clearing. An old cabin appeared with its
rustic gray weathered wood. Grass grew lushly in
front of that cabin with a large garden plot on
one side. Mom and dad called this place Addies
camp. An old woman in a cotton dress and those
clunky black shoes came out onto the front porch
to greet us. It was Addie. As I passed through
the front door of the cabin I noticed that the
wood inside of the house was gray and weathered
also. Yes, there was a front door but no interior
doors. Blankets hung in the doorways instead. The
kitchen sink. What a delight. There was an old
fashioned hand pump next to the kitchen sink. To
wash I had to pump the handle until the pure well
water flowed from the spout. Always cold. Always
good. An old cabin. A small cabin. A weathered
cabin. But such warmth. Such a feeling of peace
when one was in there.

But the best was yet to come. I went back
outside onto the porch. I glanced at the large
vegetable garden to my left. Rows and rows of
ripe corn. And tomatoes, lots of red tomatoes.
So many varieties of plants and all were edible.
My head turned straight ahead and my gaze fixed
on a river. A lazy river. The water moved so
slowly and the waters surface was flat as glass.
There was a dock and a small rowboat tied up to
it. I rushed back inside and asked my parents if
I could go out onto the river in the boat.
Surprisingly, without hesitation, they agreed.
Addie told me that the boat had a small leak and
that there was a small tin can in the boat to bail
the water out. In a flash I was on the dock and
about to enter the boat. I saw the tin can and
there was a small amount of water in the bottom
of the boat. I easily bailed it out and was on my
way. I rowed and rowed. I would go upstream
until I got tired and then bring the oars into
the boat, lay back and relax as the boat slowly
drifted along to where I had started from. I
spent an hour out there on the water. My parents
called from the shore and I returned to the dock.

It was getting late in the afternoon and
time to return home. Slowly back down the dirt
road. I delighted in the bushes once again
brushing against the sides of the car. We
returned a number of time to Addies camp and she
was always there to greet us. The warmth of the
cabin and the adventures in the rowboat made it a
little piece of Heaven right here on earth. And
if this was so then Addie must have been an angel
for she was always so kind and gentle with me.

In todays hectic world when lifes stresses
get me down, I retreat into that world of
wonderful memories of Addies camp and feel the
inner peace that I felt as a child there. Some
people think about a walk along the beach to
help them handle the stresses of their life but
for me, I prefer Addies camp.

"I enjoyed the discriptive words to paint a picture of Addie and where she lived. I felt like I shared the boat ride on a peaceful river and came back refreshed. I hope to read more from this author's works in the future." -- Nancy Rider.
"Very good. Written from the heart. You convey a mood, a place, and details of observation that capture the experience as in a Grant Wood painting. I would like to visit Addie's place and fortunately you have preserved it. " -- Glendora Rider.
