This Town Was Home Annacat
I drove down the winding road
Along the river strong as it is wide
Put down the window
Turned off the radio
To see if there was anything alive
Grey abandoned factories
Cast aside like some disease
Train station that supplied the war
Ramshackle memory
Of what was here before
Even though I’m done and gone
It won’t leave me alone
All they left standing is the bones
But this town was home
Squeezed all the profit from the ground
There was no reason to stay around
Who would have thought without a sound?
You could kill an entire town
And just walk away
Steel plants and paper mills
Whistles that tell you the time
School dance and whiskey stills
Children playing in the road
All bought and sold
Even though I’m done and gone
It won’t leave me alone
All they left standing is the bones
But this town was home
They left the train tracks behind
So that some day some one will find
The falling houses with empty leashes
Hopes of success
Erased by war and progress
Vacant stares on those who return
Left to deal with what they learn
Even though I’m done and gone
It won’t leave me alone
All they left standing is the bones
But this town was home
I came back to see my mom and dad
Resting in a field beside a stream
One last time and it’s just too sad
This town was mine and now it’s just a dream
Of what was home
