You Couldn’t Know
How many times
Can you recall
Course of your lives
That one phone call
Changes it all
So you look me in the eye
Like I don’t know what your gonna say
No good way to put it - don’t try
Wouldn’t matter either way
Let me tell you this my friend
Things about me you couldn’t know
And no matter how this might end
No surrender til I say so
Got a wife still loves me
Three kids think I’m made of stone
Friends not ready to remember me
I’m not leaving all of them alone
You tell me that I have this thing
That only one in ten survive
Hardship that treatment brings
My prayers go to the other nine
Let me tell you this my friend
Things about me you couldn’t know
And no matter how this might end
No surrender til I say so
Carried my best friend in a bag in Nam
Bled from wounds no one gets back from
Could have come back like a loaded bomb
Would have been far too much for some
I worked double shifts in the mill
Boss called me the human tool
If I needed to I’d be there still
Workin man put his kids through school
Let me tell you this my friend
Things about me you couldn’t know
And no matter how this might end
No surrender til I say so
I am not an educated man
The chance of circumstance
All I’ve done is what I can
My time to leave this dance
Will be when I say so
