I am a normal person
Anyone you often see
But I have learned a lesson
Perhaps too late for me
Huddled here in a bus station
Looking at life like you don’t want to do
Come to this hard realization
Some choices are not up to you
They say you can’t go home
I just want safe somewhere
Now that I’m all alone
I need to find my way back there
Dad left at five
It was enough for him
Left to survive
With Mom and the rest of them
Mom drank too much
Or maybe not enough
Five kids and such
Had to be tough

I waited until I was seventeen
Then took the first open door
Can’t say I was chasing dreams
Never left this small town before
Just got on a train with Cory
And whatever we could carry
Started my own sad story
Expecting we would marry

Mom died two years later
The time and wine were just too much
Putting flowers in the casket
Turned out not to be enough
And things changed for me that day
It seemed suddenly I could see
Why things turn out a certain way
And it was happening to me

Seems wrong to have to say it
Hits to the face without a glove
Tends to make you think a bit
So in the middle of this dark night
And for the first time believing
I begin my second flight
I’ve gotten good at leaving
They say you can’t go home

Now that I’m all alone
I need to find my way back there
The man at the ticket window
Looks at a ghost of what not to do
Maam where do you wanna go
Sir I haven’t got a clue
I knew that this was not where I should be
And truth had never been a friend to me
Home is a stone in a cemetery
Regret the one thing I can’t bury
And I turn and walk away
Sit down in a cold stairway
Hold my head in my hands
At least now I understand

Watching fields pass by
Waiting for the sign
Softly start to cry
