Wwii: A Soldier's Experience Wanderer Bass
My heart beat as strong as the force of a car being crushed
by a thousand iron hammers. I was intoxicated in fear, as
were my remaining friends. We were cornered and hid
behind a large, smoldering, chunk of a building that had
been torn apart from cannon fire. Only a few cartridges, a
First Aid Kit, extra bandadges, and a knife was all we had
left with us when we were broken off from the rest of
Squadron 5.
"Evan, what are you doing?" I said as he stood up with his
rifle in his hands. "Are you mad?" He looked down at me and
Drew with a serious face. His face had dirt on it and was
slightly scuffed up from the intense battle. I could see what
he was going to do. He was going to take out the enemy
that was pinning us down. Drew stood up and saluted Evan,
giving him a grenade.
"Give 'em hell, Evan." Said Drew, sitting back down with
his back laying up against the wall next to me. I clenched my
rifle harder, knowing that I wouldn't see him ever again.
"Good luck, brave soldier." I said, saluting Evan. He gave
us a smile of tired confidence, and loaded up his rifle. The
sounds of gunfire and explosions were all over as the city
we're fighting in was crumbling to dust.
Without wasting any time, Evan ran in towards the enemy
that was pinning us down.
"Eat death you sons of-" Before he could finish and rip
off the tag on the grenade to set it off, a torrent of bullets
silenced him. The bullets pummeled the building we were
hiding behind as bullet holes filled it. The ground under
us felt odd.
"John, look over here." Said Drew, pointing to the little
space inbetween us. I placed my hand on the dirt and it felt
damp. Lifting my hand up to see what I was touching, I
realized it was blood. Evan, you will be avenged. I sighed
and crawled over to the side of the building. The grenade
had a few scratches on it, but was usable. I looked from
side to side incase of anyone seeing me. Quickly, I snatched
the grenade before they noticed it disappear from their
sight.
"Drew, let's do it for Evan."
"Right." He nodded, and stood up with his rifle locked
and loaded. There was only a few feet from our shelter and
total anihilation. If we were going to die, I was going to take
them with me.
"Stay in the back, I'll act as cover." I nodded, and soon
we trudged through the rubble. Bullets flew at us at such a
speed, it was amazing. We moved about in a fast pace to
extend our survival, but we were being hit by the gatling
gun mounted behind large sacks of sand.
"Mehr Munition! Hast oben!" Yelled the gunner that was
operating the gatling gun. This gave us a shred of hope.
Tossing my gun aside, I ran ahead of Drew and ripped the
tag off of the grenade. This was for Evan, Drew, me, and all
the others who have suffered. I took a few bullets in the
shoulder and the legs, but I had to do this. With the last bit
of energy I had left, I lunged forward with the grenade about
to go off any minute, and...
