Burning Sulfur Michael J Musto
The smell of burned sulfur still circulated the room
This was anything but clean or easy
Splatters on the wall resemble a painting by Jackson Pollock
My stomach was churning at the site of his body
Remorse quickly comes and goes
Just like our friendship had
I’ve had my back stabbed one too many times
At least when I killed him he saw it coming
I let him quiver at my feet as I cocked my gun on his forehead
I heard more apologizes tonight then I have all my life
It’s not my fault though
He brought this upon himself
She was mine, not his
I thought he was my friend
There’s no doubt the neighbors heard the gun shots
They were always nosey
And I’m sure the police are on their way at this very moment
I could make it look like a suicide
But that would be giving him too much credit
As if he knew that no one cared about him anymore
I doubt he even knew I was mad at him until he couldn’t think anymore
The way I see it, I’m doing the community a service
I should be given a medal, hell I deserve a key to this city
A grin grows across his face, as someone knocks down the door and a group of officers run up the stairs
I’m in here! Three Police officers enter the room, while he sits against the wall next to the corpse
“Put down the gun!”
He refuses to listen and holds it on his lap
“I said put down the gun!”
He starts to laugh, quickly turning into a cackle
He raises the gun towards the officer speaking
As he pulls the trigger a barrage of bullets fire towards him
Blood seeps out his lips as he falls over towards his victim
What did I do wrong?
There’s a pressure on my chest that’s, that’s, unbearable
Every breathe feels like my lungs are being ripped open
It stings!
It stings so bad…
Tears roll down his cheeks
His hands unsteady, the same way as when he squeezed the trigger
His blood adds to the mural on the wall behind him
Heartbeat from a stone heart slows,
Slowly fading until it stops completely
This was once a house, now it’s no more than a battlefield
Two lives taken
Neither needed to happen
The first was killed over a lost friendship
And the second was over a lost mind
I know I should feel sad
But I refuse to be upset with what has taken place
Why should I give a shit about humanity;
When humanity refuses to act in any other way then inhumane?
As the killer took his last sips of air, he still felt no real feelings of remorse for what he did, only about what has happened to him
He questions why him, and believes none of this was his fault.
As his body goes limp and the room is silent
The burning sulfur once again owns the night
