The Survivors Jessi
I was sitting all alone on my sofa, a lone fifteen year old, when the stranger knocked. I was surprised because all my friends were over seas and I was not expecting anyone. Warily I got up and drifted towards the door. I opened it slowly, to see a boy standing there, only a year or two older than I. Before I could speak he spoke quickly ‘oh miss, I wonder if I could spend the night under your roof?’ I considered what he said for a second then sighed ‘sure’. He smiled brightly at me, as I stepped aside. I quickly closed the door on the winter cold. Then turned to see him standing awkwardly with his wet coat. I pointed to my coat hanger. I now noticed he had an old brown backpack. Though curious I gave it not much thought and led the way to my kitchen. I broke the harsh silence by saying ‘I was just about to order pizza, I hope you like pepperoni?’ he smiled again and nodded. After ordering I knew I had to organise a bed for my stranger. I frowned, ‘I guess you’ll have to sleep on the sofa, that ok?’ I knew he would say yes. Though I was ready to burst with questions, it was the rule given by someone I do not remember, to not ask questions till your guest is ready to reply. I remembered suddenly we had not exchanged names. ‘I’m kitty’ I blushed, my name was slightly unusual. ‘Ben’ he replied shortly. The pizza finally arrived, I put it on the table a got out two plates, grabbing a slice, ‘you can take a plate or not’ I laughed. I sat down without. Ben politely got a plate and sat stiffly. I pretended to scowl ‘Oh I wish you would relax and not sit like a tin soldier!’ Ben looked up in alarm then seeing my sparkling eyes he finally relaxed. He grinned knowingly ‘I guess you would like to know why I am in your house’, I nodded honestly. ‘Well, I dropped out of school in year nine coz I didn’t fit in and since then I've been travelling to different places.’ ‘Oh, an why didn’t you fit in?’ I asked. Suddenly realising I must have sounded rude. He spoke slowly ‘coz I was a survivor, I was in a car crash, my chest was crushed, everyone thought I would die. But I didn’t. All I have is a scar. The kids hated me, they said it wasn’t natural.’ I knew how that felt. ‘Similar happened to me.’ I started ‘when I was eight, someone broke into my house, they stabbed me in the neck, I should have died but I didn’t.’ We looked closely at each other. For my whole life so far, I had never met anyone else who had beat death, and now someone like me was right in the same room. Ben smiled grimly ‘We are the survivors.’ I didn’t know if it was meant to be, and after that I never saw Ben again he disappeared in the morning. All that was left of him was his brown backpack.
