Dream For An Insomniac
Rachel Joseph

Jo went through life without a dream and literally so.
She was an insomniac; an orphan who grew up all by herself
and had no friend or foe. She ran a restaurant in a beautiful
village in England. Tall with tomboyish looks and cropped hair
no guy would give her a second look. If they did they would
have noticed the aristocratic rise of her nose, the full lips
and the smile that constantly hovered at their corners.

She ran the restaurant like some French hotel owner.
Her tastes were classic and her customers felt like heaven
sitting there. She worked all day but the labors bore no fruit.
She got no sleep. She would put an alarm for 5 in the morning,
read till 3 and still sleep did not overcome her. She would turn
and toss till 5 and then the old day would continue.

It was on a bright sunny afternoon that a ray of sunshine
walked into the restaurant, literally so. Jo was at her desk reading
the "Return of the Native” by Thomas Hardy when this good looking
guy with tousled hair walked in with a guitar in hand. He walked up
and said he would like to play in the restaurant. She reckoned it
was a good idea. The next few minutes were spend in testing his music
skills. His playing was as perfect as the shape of his nose!!! He oozed
all the Italian charm that his name suggested, Ivo Palazzi.

Ivo was a instant hit with the customers. The number of ladies
visiting the restaurant increased manifold. Initially Jo was not complaining.
Her business was booming. But later his infuriatingly good looks brought an
ache to her heart each time she saw him. Another thing she envied was his ability
to sleep. He could sleep at all odd hours; anytime he was not working he would be
dozing behind the counter. As they got to know each other they realized they had
the same likes and dislikes. Books were a common passion. They spent countless
hours in the company of Shakespeare, Hardy, and Dickens and in the melodious
company of poets like Milton, Dante and....The nights still continued to haunt Jo
but the days compensated for it. She looked forward to every new day with Ivo.

The summer after he walked into her life Ivo asked her to accompany him on a
trip to Italy. She agreed even without a thought of what she was walking into.
He happened to live in this picturesque Italian village, the very soil of which
had the intoxicating fragrance of romance. That was where she came face to face with
a dark facet of his life. His parents had been killed during the war, his older sister
raped and killed before his eyes. As Ivo told her the story there appeared no bitterness
in his eyes but an agony that cut through her heart. He had not slept for days after that.
All he did was walk through the streets like a madman screaming out for his parents and sister.
Until one day he stumbled upon this kid who had lost both his legs and family in artillery fire.
But this child was still cheerful, crawling about trying to search for a new world. The sight moved
him like nothing else, brought him back to his senses .He realized that there were people with greater
pain than him in the world and life does not end with pain. On the contrary pain spurs the growth of
new life, a better and more beautiful life. As he took that child into his arms his heart had peace
with the world. Since then he slept like a child whenever sleep overtook him. As Ivo ended the story Jo
could feel her heart melt. Se knew she had met the man of her dreams if she ever had any! But she new
she would never let him know. After all he was just too handsome for her; just one look at him was heart

The next few days flew like a whirlwind. She swam with him, went hiking on the mountains,
and picked wild flowers on the valley. Jo woke up every morning to the smell of the morning air
and the touch of dewdrops on her face. She never realized when love struck him. But the first night they
were together they made love like two people who were hungry for a million years. The morning sun saw her
sleep peacefully, beautifully like a child in his arms. Wonder what dreams did the insomniac see?!

"I really enjoyed your story. Would love to read the finish of it. This is the first time I have answered one of these. I love to read. Keep up the good work." -- Alice Bailey, Dothan, Ala., Houston.
