And the Master looked at the pupil and asked "And?" and the pupil
shook his head, embarrassed, and fled the room. The Master turned to a
man sweeping the courtyard.
"And?" he said.
"And what?"
"And why are you here?"
"I'm sweeping the courtyard." he said, leaning on the broom and
sweeping a hand in the universal gesture of obviousness.
"And why are you sweeping the courtyard?"
"Please, Learned Sir, go back to your business."
"What?" said the Master.
"I attend to mine, sweeping, and you to yours, talking."
"It is more than words, Sweeper."
"Yes, but all the fine words, all the lessons, all the bringing the
soul closer to godhood can't move this broom, nor sweep this
courtyard. Talking is talking, but sweeping is doing."
"So, Sweeper, there are no words that cannot move your broom nor still it?"
"No."
Said the Master, "You're fired."
