Joy sat down at the bar and waited for her boyfriend, Nathan, of eight months now, to come in. They had actually met through a mutual friend at this exact bar about a year ago. When they met in 2088, Joy was in the process of receiving her real estate license. Today she finished closing a deal for the most expensive house yet built on the moon, and she and everyone around her were amazed at how much progress she had made in a year. She traded up to a nicer apartment in what used to be SOHO but is now called NewMO due to all the new money flooding into the area. She also recently traded in her CT’84 for a new WB’89 which had a faster flying speed. Joy remembered growing up in a time when the person driving the car actually had to pay attention and not just put the address of where you wanted to go and sit back and watch the scenery. With all of the year’s great turn arounds she was only waiting on one tiny detail to fall into place, and she thought it might happen tonight.
Sipping her champagne and thinking of the night that was unfolding in front of her, Joy smiled to herself as she watched Nathan’s car pull up. He jumped out, hit a button on his pocket keypad, and the car flew off to a parking spot.
Nathan came through the doors and Joy couldn’t help but watch his suit clad body effortlessly walk towards the bar. His walk and his suit made Nathan look so powerful Joy could not stop herself from going weak in the knees. It was a good thing she was sitting, otherwise she would have been a puddle on the floor. Nathan was the kind of handsome that every woman dreams about and every man envies, secretly of course. His dark hair was full and begged for someone to rub their fingers through it. The color of emeralds, his piercing green eyes could look into Joy’s soul. Always covered in a hint of stubble his jaw was unbelievably strong. However, Nathan’s best feature was his kindness and compassion. He was practically perfect in everyway as Joy’s mother always boasted to family, friends and neighbors.
As soon as Nathan was able to see Joy from her place at the bar they locked eyes and shared a flirtatious smile. Nathan strided over to Joy and enveloped her in an embrace and kiss that rivaled any romantic movie. He sat down beside her and put his drink order in the bar computer and the drink rose from within the bar.
“How was work today?” Joy asked tentatively.
She knew he had a big meeting with a financer for the branch of his company that he wanted to open on the moon.
“It was great. Everything is fully financed, and it looks like the construction on the building will start tomorrow,” Nathan answered, “but enough about work, how much longer until our table is ready?”
Just as he asked this, a notification came up on the computer informing them that their table was ready at the same time as a hostess arrived to show them to their table.
As they followed the hostess to their table, Joy realized that Nathan seemed more distant and quiet than normal but decided he was probably nervous about the big night that tonight could become. She was nervous also and thought that he was probably ten times as nervous since he was doing the asking. Sitting down and looking over the menu on the screens in the table they made small talk about friends and family.
“So have you seen your mother lately?” Joy innocently asked the loaded question. She knew that his mother had his grandmother’s engagement ring, which she had left Nathan. She also knew that however safe the postal service was now with their teleports you just don’t mail a 3.5 carat diamond ring.
“Actually yes. She came up yesterday for a friend’s party and brought over a few things from home for me,” Nathan answered looking down at the menu not meeting Joy’s eyes.
Joy’s mind started going a billion miles an hour. “He is going to ask me, isn’t he?” she thought to herself “By tonight I will be engaged to the man of my dreams.” Joy couldn’t help herself. A little giggle escaped and she tried to quiet it with a sip of her champagne but that only worsened the situation. Luckily the waiter came over to ask them if they had any questions about the menu. Nathan answered for them and they went back to looking over the menu. Joy decided on the chicken while Nathan went with the flank steak. Once they put in their order, the food was delivered within seconds by a waiter.
Joy managed to get through the dinner without letting on that she suspected anything. They talked their way through their salads and main courses and decided to share a dessert. Once the dessert made its way to their table Joy couldn’t help looking through every bite she took just to make sure he didn’t hide the ring in the dessert. With every bite Joy took without finding the ring her heart fell. Maybe it isn’t going to happen tonight. Her disappointment must have shown on her face. When Nathan asked if anything was wrong, Joy realized they had finished the dessert about three minutes ago, and she had not found the ring or spoken a word since.
“I’m fine. Thanks, honey,” Joy answered not feeling alright.
“Well, I think we need to talk,” Nathan voiced. Joy’s excitement was restored; she couldn’t wait for him to ask.
“Of course. What is it?” Joy eagerly answered.
“Well, I have been thinking and I think we are at a point in our relationship when we need to take it to the next level, or something needs to change,” Nathan spoke his feelings.
“I totally agree!” Joy impatiently answered.
“And I think that this has gone on too long, I think we should start to see other people….only other people,” Nathan crushed Joy with these words.
Joy’s universe stopped.
