"He's 38 years old, never kissed a girl"
----The Tradgically Hip
Guilty. Thats what the jury said. Guilty of the rape and murder of 4 year old Ann Marie Baker. Richard was 18 then. He had spent the last 14 years in this cell. Everyone claimed to be inocent in that prison except for Richard.
He always felt he deserved it after what he had done. It always reminded him of what Anne Marie Baker went through on her last day of life. All becuase of him. He wished he could take it back but it was too late. She had cried out for her mommy. A good person would have taken Ann Marie Baker home to her parents. He wasn't a good person. This was all his fault. He had broken down and cried when they found her body. He was chocked with regret and shame. It was the worst thing he had done in his life. She would never see her mommy again and it was becuase of him.
He had seen Anne Marie often going back and forth down the sidewalk in front of her parents on her little red tricycle. Her pretty long blonde hair like a mane of sunshine. Such a tiny little girl. Such a pretty smile. So full of life. That day was the first time he had seen her away from her block. She must have wandered off.
She was in the school yard, as he was walking by, and he saw her fall. There was no one else around. He used his handkerchief to wipe the blood off her tiny little knees. He was in a hurry. He had to get this over with and get home before his mom did.
Mom had been angry when she found out about the drugs. She watched him like a hawk now. Where were you? Why are you late? It was only a little weed. Harmless really. He had to hurry and he had to get home. He put the handkerchief in his pocket. The handkercheif his mom found later. The one she gave to the cops. The one that convicted him.
He told Anne Marie Baker to head on home. He only looked back once. The last time he saw Ann Marie Baker she was still crying and heading towards her little red tricycle. Alone.
