Facing The Dark Cari Graham
..........The little girl shudders as she huddles under the covers. She has them pulled so tightly about her frail body she can barely breathe. She knows that she must be very still and not make a sound or her nightmare will begin again..........
The woman awakes with a start! Sweat has gathered and dampened her bed and her pillow is wet from the tears shed during the night. For thirty years she has awakened from this dream. For thirty years she has relived her childhood. She closes her eyes and it is so clear now. What used to be buried deep has risen to the surface, an evil presence to be exorcised and banished from her memories.
Daylight brings a new beginning. She will take this day and go back in her past and resolve this. There must be peace. Her therapist has told her to write what she cannot speak. It will help with the healing process. She pours herself another coffee and sits at the kitchen table. With pen in hand she begins the arduous task of writing.
She is nine. She is beautiful. She is happy. What does she know of life? Life to her is kittens, and flowers and butterflies and that new pink ribbon in her hair. She loves everyone, even the bee that stung her last summer. She trusts.
She is alone with someone. She is hurt. She is afraid she is going to die. She doesn't know what he is doing. She doesn't know that he won't kill her if she tells someone. She only knows her fear. He comes for her at night when the family is sleeping. He comes in the dark, quietly sliding under the covers with her. His hands moving along her body. He is touching her in that place that her mother said was hers alone. This isn't right! This is making her sick to her stomach. He is pressing something hard up next to her. Something is wet on her leg. He is gone. She lies crying softly. Tomorrow he will be back. She hopes tomorrow will never come.
She feels ugly. Her smiles do not reach her eyes. Life is painful to her. She doesnt play the way other children do. She sits alone and cries. She is afraid. She can not love. She does not trust. She wants to die.
She puts her pen down on the table and wipes her tears. It is surprising how she feels. A sense of calm has settled over her. She has begun the journey to peace. She is a survivor. She will conquer her past. She has made the first step by telling someone, even if it was only to tell herself.
