Together Alone (Short Stories) A little dark but Hell, what's it all about? [780 words] [Horror]
Darkness with all its hidden fears have followed her from childhood into adulthood. Fear of what, she has never fathomed, though somehow she has always known that her purpose on earth is pre-planned for her. She has always felt helpless.
Rarely does she sleep in bed, and when she does it is during daylight. The last time was two nightmarish even for her to talk about it. The numb feeling of paralysis, unable to open her eyes, the knowledge that she was not alone in the dark. She shrinks herself into a tight ball at the very memory of whatever it was that crept closer to her, enveloping her in its dark cloak-like figure. And then it entered her.
The baby cries in the next apartment and she tries to ignore it. So it cries louder. She touches her stomach and feels how large it is, closes the window and puts her fingers in her ears. Still it cries. She screams at it in her head and the crying stops. The child falls asleep, giving her the peace and quiet she needs to cry for herself.
Through the tears she feels movement and subconsciously strokes her stomach. Her breasts feel hot and painful. She feels the need to feed something, but it is a stupid thought, her exhaustion overcomes her and the quiet lulls her. She drifts slowly into the in-between sleep state where images flash in front of the eyes like a slide show. Then she drifts further into blackness and the slide show ends.
Shes in a dark place again. Shes been there before, but it is different this time. The same fear, the same paralysis, the knowledge that she is not alone; but the dark one isnt there. Something else is. She has difficulty breathing, because it is resting on her chest. It feels warm; too warm and very wet. She can feel it breathing and hear it snuffling. The small needle-sharp claws dig into her flesh as it moves slowly over her breasts. She still cant move and panic overwhelms her as its mouth nears her nipple, its tongue darting back and forth, searching, and then the pain as its sharp teeth take a grip and it cruelly suckles.
It feeds. She lies there helpless whilst it satisfies its hunger and then releases itself. It feels colder now, its body heat lost. It shivers violently. Slowly it moves down her stomach, its sharp claws getting tangled in her pubic hair. Her screams are silent as she endures the tearing pain as it returns from whence it came. To safety and warmth until the time comes for it to feed again.
