Our septic system was an interesting animal. Because the farm house we lived in was very old, we had to work on this beast quite a bit. There was a great debate between my dad and I about what exactly this thing was. The one side of the argument was a "septic tank" and the other was a "finger system". Well, I think in the end we settled on a hybrid or a mixture of the two technologies. Anyhow, we were always working on this thing. I had to dig it up several times.
One of those times my brother Jason, who was about 4 or 5, was outside playing. He asked me what I was doing because I was digging a hole in the yard. I told him that I was digging for buried treasure. He got very excited and went to the shed to get a shovel. He started digging feverously and then decided to tell Mary, my sister. Mary came out to take a look. She was a bit more skeptical than my brother, but with a little persuasion she was convinced to help. I gave her my shovel and told them that I would go look for another spade. This took me quite some time because I had a few thing of my own that I wanted to do. Things like work on my scooter, mini-bike, and go-cart engines.
I eventually came back over there with a shovel. They kept asking me where I was. I told them that I couldn't find the spade and had to look everywhere for another shovel. You would be surprised how fast you can dig when you are motivated. They did a pretty good job and very getting pretty close. I got down in the hole and help them out. Eventually we hid the "lid", which is a slab of cement that sets over tank. They got very excited about this, especially my brother. We started cleaning the dirt off of the top of the lid and my dad dropped by. He asked my brother and sister "What are you guys doing out here?" My brother rebutted "We're digging for buried treasure!". At this he laughed and said "You're digging for treasure all right". He didn't say anything and helped us clear the dirt around the lid. After that, he and I lifted the lid off the tanks and smell bellowed out of that thing like a ghost. He started laughing and my brother and sister started throwing dirt at me. They didn't think it was very funny.
