After that day my life was changed forever. It was
just like any other school day except after school
my brother, my mom and me all went into Buckeye to
get sports physicals done. We had started heading
home and we were about 10 miles away and my dad
called to tell us that a monsoon was starting. This
was good news....the desert was really dry after
the summer. After we went under the overpass it was
getting really hard to see anything in front of us.
My mom pulled off into the median and almost hit
the flatbed diesel in front of us.Diesels were
barely missing us and hitting the diesel in front
of us.I was in the back seat completely in shock
and my brother was up front yelling at my mom to
pull down off the road and into the desert. My mom
was freaking out and she wouldn't pull off the
road. Finally my brother got her to pull off the
road.About 2 seconds after we stopped, a diesel
doing about 70 miles an hour hit directly into the
back of the flatbead diesel, right where we had been
parked.I turned and looked through the back window and
watched the diesel catch on fire. The man in the
truck got out through the passenger side window and
came running up to the truck. It was so dusty out
that we could hardly see him through our window.
While all this was happening I could still hear
cars and diesels slamming on their brakes and
crashing all though you could not see them through
all of the dust.My mom was trying to call 911 but
the weren't answering. We all decided that we
should get out of the truck and jump the barbwire
fence and run as far as we could. My mom was in
heel's and a skirt so the man helped her over the
fence. I cut my leg on it and it started to bleed
but it wasn't that bad. When we got on the other
side of the fence we realized that the reason the
dust was so bad in that particular area was because
the farmer's had just plowed the field, so the dirt
was like powder.Once we got far enough out we stood
there letting the dirt hit us.The sand was so tiny
yet it hurt my legs so bad when it would hit them.
My mom then got on the phone to try to call my dad.
When he had finally answered he couldn't hear a word
she was saying.Luckily, he was outside of our house
watching the storm hit and he looked over and he saw
the accident on I-10.The man that was with us started
using our cell phone to call his wife and kids.About
5 minutes later my dad pulled up next to us in the field
we could hardly even see eachother when we were all hugging.
Everytime another diesel would crash we would fall to the
ground because the impact was so big. I was standing
there watching the diesels burn to the ground.I was trying
not to listen to the people screaming because they were
trapped inside their car burning to death.I remember
saying to myself that the whole thing looked like a bad
horror movie where everything is happening so fast that
you don't know what to do.My dad had left us and got in
our truck and drove it over the barbwire fence. Then he
took off running to help save other people.I was crying
because I didn't want him to go in there. When he was on his
way back to us he found a lady lying on the ground, she told
my dad that she thought she had broke her ankle. When my dad
looked down he could hardly believe his eyes. Her leg was 80%
gone, and what was left of it was just covered in sand. The lady
kept asking my dad where her husband and kids were.My dad told
her that he was going to try to find help and look for her family.
I was still standing in the field amazed by what had happened. When
my dad finally came back we decided to just leave because there wans't
a reason to just stand a watch all these horrible things happen.
As we drove through the dirt field we noticed ton's of car's lined
up and people standing outside of them talking. These car's belonged
to the people that came from their house to see what was going on.They
were acting like it was a social event, but to me it was the scariest
thing I had ever seen. This changed my life in ways I never thought nything
could. The weirdest thing about this was that we had stopped and gotten Chinese
food on the way home and they gave us a fortune cookie. When we got home
I opened it and it said,"You will take an unwilling chance in the near
future and win." Life is short and I have promised myself that I will live
like I'm dying.
