The Building (Part One Of ?)
Normally, Phillip Morrison woke up in a queen sized bed. Normally he awoke to the sound of his alarm clock going off. And normally he would see the familiar setting of his master bedroom all around himself.
However this particular morning happened to be different. This particular morning there was no queen bed. There was no alarm clock. And though he couldn’t see anything due to the darkness the room felt much different than his normal room.
The smell and the feel were most noticeable. It felt empty and dry. Almost as if he had been the first one to ever be in this room. The sheets were scratchy and rough, a sure sign they had never been used. And the air smelled perfect. A smell he had never smelt before, and it was completely nothing.
He had only a moment to absorb his new surroundings before a headache kicked in. Slight at first, and then violent. He screamed out in pain. He pushed his index finger into his temple and rubbed. Yet the pain persisted. And Phillip fell to the floor.
The bed’s comforted was still wrapped around him when he did. And he beat his head off the floor. The pain becoming so intense he could barely feel his head hit the floor. He pushed into his eyes with all his might. Using his palms, he damn near crushed his eyes right from his socket.
Phillip reached up and found the bed in the darkness. He smashed his face into and screamed as loud as he could into the mattress. And just as quickly as the pain had started it went away.
He curled into a small ball on the floor and wept. In the seconds between the sobs he heard the sound of electricity, humming gently above him. Phillip looked up to see the darkness had been traded for light. Complete white light. Almost blinding.
He could barely make out the dimensions of the room. The walls seemed to just blend in with the light. But he could make out the outline of a hallway and it stretched to a far end.
Phillip stood up and felt his way over to the wall. And then he walked down the hallway using the walls as a guide.
He had been so preoccupied moments before with his head pain, that he forgot where he was. He seemed to not even notice that he wasn’t where he was supposed to be.
“HELLO!” he yelled. There was no answer.
He ran back down the hallway to where he woke up. He felt the bed. White sheets. White Blanket. White frame.
He ripped the sheets off the bed, only to expose a white mattress. He got up on top of the bed and started to beat against the wall. It felt like it was hollow on the other side. It felt as if it could be smashed open on the other side.
However, the harder he beat, the less and less chance it seemed that the wall would actually open up. So he sat down on the bed and thought.
“Where the hell am I?”
Phillip began thinking about where he was the night before. He wasn’t real sure. Come to think of it he didn’t remember anything. Nothing.
He soon began realizing that his memory was gone. Everything. He frantically tried to think of a childhood memory. A birthday party. A vacation. Nothing. The only thing at that moment that he was absolutely certain of was that his name was Phillip Morrison. And he knew he wasn’t where he was supposed to be.
His body began to tremble. Where was he? How did he get here? A flurry of images paraded across his mind. He tried to make memories temporarily to figure out where he was. But he knew them all to be false. And each thought that crossed his mind invariably led him right back to the same white hall way. With the white bed, and the white light.
And so once again he started back down the hallway. Feeling his way along in search of the end. He comforted himself with the thought that this was a prank. And soon he someone, he couldn’t think of who, but someone would pop out laughing. The thought of that angered him. And anger became his driving force.
Perhaps it was because he was moving rather slow, but the hallway seemed to stretch forever. Phillip began to think that this hallway led him further and further into nothing, and that an end would never come. A journey into a limitless abyss. And the moment he thought of turning back, he touched a curve in the wall. A sharp curve. A corner.
Working around he felt a crack in the wall. Just a slight crack. Phillip felt around the crack which led him to the white door knob. He turned in and pushed in.
It opened into a room that seemed to be the exact opposite of the room he ha been in. The room was completely dark. Except for the window directly in front of him. It poured in light from the outside. And the light in turn revealed a spiral stair case right in front of the window.
As he walked in the door closed behind him. He turned only to find that the door. And the wall had disappeared. And beyond that was darkness. The same emptiness as the hallway. Only darker.
He felt around for a wall but there was none. And upon realizing this Phillip ran over to the window.
He looked out to see the sky, and saw hundreds of feet tumble before him. Phillip was in a building. A very tall building. Perhaps the tallest ever built. Below him he could see the streets and workings of a city.
A small town however. The skyscraper seemed somewhat out of place, for such a small town. However none of this was what Phillip was truly focusing on. He tried to open the window. But there were no cracks. It seemed as if the window just meshed into the wall.
He pounded on it, trying to break it open. It shuddered under the blows, but showed no sigh whatsoever that it was going to break.
Phillip looked down into the spiral staircase, but could not see where it led. But it went down, and it appeared that down was where he needed to head.
“Son of a bitch.” he said aloud. His breath became deeper and he wiped the sweat off his forehead. It was hotter in this room. The white hallway was cool. For a moment his wished he had just stayed there. But realized he wanted the hell out of here.
And so he took one last look out the window, and began a descent into God knew what…
