At firehouse no. 317 the firemen were considered brothers, and they were all very close. They shared a family like bond.
As Bryan, a well-built kind-hearted, respected man walked in the doors of a New York City firehouse, his friends began greeting him.
Now with all the firemen being quite gregarious, stronger bonds were formed and they covered many topics by being as social as they were. Most of the guys refered to Bryan as Teddy Bear because he was really just one big teddy bear, big but sweet.
Hey, Bryan, hows it going? asked Assistant Chief Frank with his New Yorker accent.
Pretty good, how you doin? replied Bryan.
Then conversation began to flow again from man to man causing the room to become more rowdy and the attention then shifted off of Bryan.
Awaiting Bryans arrival was his best friend Paul aka, Paulie. Paulie was a bit more goofy and humorous than Bryan. He also had a smaller build. They met at the lockers and began a conversation, the typical talk, nothing too extraordinary.
Bryan and Paulie both liked to look outside of the firehouse to see the extravagant view of the World Trade Center.
Its like they touch the sky, awed Bryan.
Yep, theyre really something, stated Paulie.
A couple of hours passed with some firemen working out, eating, or just sitting around since there had been no calls yet that day. Others rested like Paulie and Bryan because their shifts had often been tiring. Suddenly the two woke up hearing a big CRASH! Then there was complete silence as if nothing was alive. For what seemed like hours, yet was only seconds of stillness, nothing seemed to even breath. You could hear a pin drop. Following these seconds of silence were screaming and the sounds of chaos.
The firemen then ran to the windows only to find a big cloud of dust, people sprinting, and the two towers that once touched the sky were shrouded in smoke. Positive that something was wrong all of the firemen then ran to their lockers putting on their suits. Fully assured that they were going to be needed, everyone readied, and minutes later the bell rang so everyone headed out. As they jumped in the fire trucks Bryan and Paulie told each other goodbye as they always did since they werent assigned to the same truck.
They drove off and all anyone could hear were ear piercing screams and sirens sounding. As they approached the towers, the men were told what to do and off they went. Walking over heaps of building scraps to work their way into the trembling building. Both Paulie and Bryan went inside although they were a distance apart.
Bryan entered and helped people who were trapped or injured, and he brought them out to safety. Paulie did the same along with all the other firemen. As Bryan and Paulie brought out victims, they found out more about the situation. The chief told them that planes had crashed into the two towers. They thought to themselves, wondering why anyone would want to cause the two towers to collapse or to be destroyed. And they knew that whoever did this would be abominated by all Americans. Many hours passed and they continued. When Bryan went to a young lady who was isolated behind piles of debris, a large sheet of ceiling fell on him leaving him and the young lady trapped. It began to cause Bryan great suffering, and he wasnt sure if anyone would find them.
With all his might and his very last breaths, he began to scream for help.
 Help!
Somebody please...muttered Bryan as he choked on his last gasps of air and became unconscious.
Paulie heard a familiar voice, and he ran towards the sound. At last he found who was screaming and saw that unfortunately it was Bryan and another unlucky victim. So he tried to plan a method of retrieving the two from under the burning ceiling piece. His strategy was to lift up the piece so others could manage to shift the bodies away from danger. His plan worked, and the two were freed.
Paulie knew that he had to take both Bryan and the young lady outside the building to receive medical attention. So, with some struggle and stress, he first took the lady out of the building. Then as fast as he could, he went back into the building to save his best friend, Bryan. He ran as fast as he could and arrived by his side just in time to save his life. He carried Bryan out of the building and handed the still unconscious man to the medics. He waited to help the others in the building.
Atfer going in and out of the building for over 15 hours, firehouse no. 317 had nothing left that they could do. So all the firemen went either back to the firehouse or to their homes. There, there wasnt much said since the firemen and all of America were in shock from what had just happened. Paulie on the other hand was very worried about his friend.
Trying to go to the hospital to see Bryan, Paulie struggled because of all that had been going on in New York. After slowly working his way to the hospital, he finally made it to Bryans room. There he found Bryan with broken ribs, a broken leg, still unaware of what had happened, and very beaten up from the incident. After about two weeks, Bryan went back to work to work with Paulie and the firemen at the firehouse.
Many of the other firemen made it out okay, but a horrible number of them were lost in fires and some were crushed to death. A memorial service was held for the firemen along with all others who had passed away during this tragic event. And an honorary service was held for those like the brothers at firehouse no. 317 who had served to save and protect the lives of others. Bryan and Paulie were considered heroes and continued working at the firehouse, never forgetting what happened on September 11, 2001.
