The Tower
P J Francis

Isn’t life funny?

One minute you are the worlds most popular guy, then in the next second you are enemy number one.

I guess that’s the story of my life there. Family man turned bad.

I try not to blame myself. The conflict was not of my own making, rather another mans greed.

Power.

Isn’t that another of life’s odd little words?

I recall standing in the tower, sweat dripping into my eyes as I held my gun. The nerves nearly got me for a second, but I fired that killing bullet, slow and true.

It wasn’t my fault. I only ever followed orders.

Assassination.

I wasn’t told much, I mean the guy was a stone cold baby murdering dictator.

So I was told.

I have had to live with my guilt and naivety.

I snuffed out an innocent mans life, just on the say so of another man in uniform.

It hurts.

I am haunted by visions of that simple splatter of blood. It was too easy.

I am alone now, deserted by all and sundry that were in the know.

Scapegoat is another strange word.

I am sitting in the tower now, still holding my gun with sweaty hands.

I can taste the oil of the barrel in my mouth. I wonder if his children miss him. I know mine don’t.

It will be quick, just one bang and spurt of blood.

A life for a life. Isn’t that the old saying?
