The Markings Of An Angle
Narinder Bhambra

Pauline felt sorry for her daughter as she did not realize how lonely she was and maybe if she got her a pet that she would overcome her tantrums.

Stella’s tantrum was getting so out of hand, that when Pauline took her to the doctors they referred her to a child psychiatrist. During a session with the child psychiatrist, they watched Stella pick up a teddy bear and place it on Pauline’s lap and than she continued to play with the toys. After which they said to Pauline that she wants another sister. Pauline picked Stella up and never took her back again. After all it was bad enough to cope with Stella’s tantrums and to have another baby!

It was out the question to have another baby at forty. So Pauline took her daughter to choose a puppy. "Mummy takes that one, the one that keeps hiding behind the others" cried Stella. Oh look he has a cross on his body let’s take him. Pauline had to pay £300 for him.

It was Easter and when the little puppy began to sit up, Pauline could notice the cross. The puppy was black except for the cross which was white. As it was Easter, Pauline decided to take out her digital camera and take some photos of the puppy. She got hold of him and put him on the stairs so that she could take some good pictures especially of the cross. She was even thinking of naming him hot cross bun. But she got a surprise, when the picture was run of the commuter. It was a miracle there on her dog was the markings of an angel complete with a halo. The head was on the dog’s neck and the wings were spread across either side even the waist was fully showing as the body of the angel. In almost light brown colours there were two pillars. What were they it was as if they were the gates of Heaven with the Angle in the middle?

Pauline immedially ran up stairs and took out a very old photo. Baba was almost 100 years old. He wore a white long beard, he had a few of his own teeth and his face was full of deep winkles that you could almost count them. His spine was almost a round circle supported by the cane stick that served him so well in those days. Pauline’s father used to say, "Nothing mattered to him any more, almost as if God was preparing him to leave behind his worldly goods. And to Baba his simple white kurta was all he now needed which looked holy with this white beard".

Her father Mr Jackson served in the army during the British Raja. She looked at the black and white photo of her mother and father and herself when she was a baby on her mother’s lap. Next to her mother was an old man called Baba. Father used to talk a lot about Baba and how Baba had turned her father into a relious person. Even though there was a war going on in India, her father had learnt to mediate. Baba would perform miracles. And showed Mr. Jackson how to obtain spiritual self being within one’s self He showed him how to find God within his own heart. When the English Raj finished in India Mr. Jackson came back to Glasgow with his family. Even at the age of seven, Pauline remember how her father had taught her to mediate and gained spiritual contact with God. When Pauline had her daughter Stella she could not understand why Stella was so disturbed. Pauline was puzzled as to why the markings of an angle were sent from heaven. What are these signs? There was only one way to find out. Pauline had to go to India to see if Baba’s family could help her.

When she mentioned the idea to her husband he thought that Pauline had gone mad.

"But look, our daughter never cuts her hair, she lives in this country and should be like the children here but why is she growing up as if she is an Asian, even the Indian family down our road treat her as if she is their daughter- and she loves their Indian food".

It took Pauline six months to save up to go to India. At the back of her Fathers photo there was an address. So Pauline wrote to Baba family. They said that she was welcome to their home anytime that she liked. Pauline watched her daughter grow up and it did not seem like Stella was her daughter. Stella did not look like Pauline. Stella loved to dress up like an Indian Girl. She liked going to her neighbour’s house who were Indians. In fact they loved Stella because she looked great in their Indian costume. They loved her long hair, and even complemented that it was longer than their own daughter’s hair.

Pauline told her daughter that they were going on holiday. Stella insisted they take Rex with them. It was an eight hour flight. And as soon as they got of at Delhi Airport they were greeted by an old man that identically looked like Baba. Pauline held the photo high and waved as if she had known the old man for years.

‘Baba’, cried Stella.

Pauline was shocked. How did Stella know his name for Pauline never discussed Baba with her?

‘Baba’, Stella hugged the old man nearly knocking him to the ground.

‘I know l look like Baba, but I am Baba’s son Ramah’ replied the old man.

‘No you are Baba’, cried Stella.

‘Ok you can call me Baba’, said the old man. ‘You must be very tired; come with me the cab is waiting to take you home’,

As the cab turned Pauline got Stella on her lab to show her the country side.

‘That is where Sony lived’, shouted Stella.

Over there in that house’,

'Who is Sony?' asked Pauline.

‘He was Baba’s cousin.’ Replied the old man

It was getting too much for Pauline, how her daughter knew all this. Perhaps her husband told her, no; that was out of the question. Pauline was puzzled.

As soon as they got to Baba’s house, Stella ran upstairs as if she already knew the place. But she wouldn’t go in the top bedroom. She started to shake with fear.

Paul thought that her daughter was over tired from the long journey, plus the mosquito bites didn’t help. When Ramah show Rex, he was shocked. He had seen photo’s of this dog.

"I have a photo somewhere upstairs." said Ramah.

At night Stella, ran a very high temperature, she was almost as hot as a radiator. She was mumbling Pauline could not understand what she was saying. Maybe the temperature has gone to her head. So Paul tried to keep Stella Cool.

Ramah came in the room with a very old photograph of a dog. It looked like Rex. As Ramah sat next to Pauline to show her the photo, He heard the little girl talking in Indian.

"Madam, your daughter is talking Indian, you teach her Indian in England?" asked the amazed Ramah.

"No that’s not India she is confused because of the temperature "Pauline assured him.

"No, madam, that is Indian, I can understand what your daughter saying", said Ramah.

"What is she saying", Pauline was alarmed.

""She saying Please help, don’t burn me", said Ramah.

"Madam, long time ago, When Baba was alive, there used to be a young girl living in this house, before Baba moved in. The girl’s husband treated her badly. Because he could not have any children, her mother in law set fire to the girl and killed her. This girl used to have this dog. Look photo.

He showed Pauline the photo of a dog that looked the same like Rex. This dog went to save the girl but he too was burned alive.

"What happened next" asked: Pauline puzzled.

Nobody would buy the house, so Baba bought it. He was not scared of anybody as he prayed to God.

"L’am very confused" said Pauline.

"Madam, your daughter and her dog has been born again. The Marking of the Angle is a blessing in disguise. It is a form of protection that nobody can harm your daughter and Rex is here to protect her.

Is this the answers that Pauline was searching for?
