The Legend Of Mt. Kilauea And Santa Claus Donna Nowak
Many, many, many, many years ago, on December 24th, the volcano Mt. Kilauea, the meanest Hawaiian volcano, was becoming restless. So restless in fact, that he intended to ruin Christmas!
You see. Mt. Kilauea was the only volcano who didn’t receive a gift from Santa Claus each year. All of the other volcanoes would receive new cleaner ashes to send into the air, or even alarm clocks so the volcano wouldn’t sleep through the designated time to erupt.
But not Mt. Kilauea, he never received anything from Santa Claus.
That’s because Mt. Kilauea was a naughty and mean volcano and Santa surely couldn’t reward such a mean spirited volcano, unless he at least TRIED to be good and sweet like the other volcanoes.
So, on Christmas Eve, Mt. Kilauea’s smoke started to rise ever so slowly, until there was a thick ominous cloud hovering above the volcano, and the city. The smoke was so thick and so dark, the children were afraid Santa Claus wouldn’t be able to find their homes to deliver toys and goodies, and this was much to Mt. Kilauea’s delight!
But Santa, who always knows who is being naughty and nice, went to see Mt. Kilauea right away!
When Santa and his sleigh arrived at Mt. Kilauea, the smoke and ash filled air was so thick and dark, that Santa accidentally flew into the volcano! The reindeer were frightened, and could not find their way out of the dark and ashy volcano, and even Rudolph’s glowing red nose didn’t help!
Santa, not giving up hope, said to Mt. Kilauea:
“Mt. Kilauea, you have been a mean and naughty volcano in the past, but it only takes a little bit of good will to change. You are strong and one of the eldest volcano’s, and the others look up to you. Every year, I check my list to see if you have behaved, and I am very sad when I see you haven’t. You see, Mt. Kilauea, I never stopped thinking about you, I only want you to be the best volcano I know you can be.”
After Santa spoke, Mt. Kilauea was so touched by what Santa said, he coughed as strongly as he could, and Santa Claus and his sleigh were thrust into the air. So high in fact, that other children from other Hawaiian towns, who were watching for Santa from their bedroom windows, saw Santa come out of the volcano with toys and goodies on his sleigh. Because so many children saw Santa Claus come out from the volcano, the nest year, all of the children’s letters to Santa were sent to Mt. Kilauea! Today, many, many, many, many, years later, children all over Hawaii still send their letters to Santa Claus to Mt. Kilauea!
