THE CASTLE

The story that I am going to tell you about, begins in Mödling, a small town near to Vienna, Austria. The castle that I am going to tell you about is called Liechtenstein. You should see its mighty walls and towers, a castle like those you read about in fairy tales but this castle exists.

I was travelling through Austria on my way to Vienna as I saw it for the very first time. I just couldn’t believe what I was seeing, a mighty building grey and black with slanted red tiled roofs. Next to the castle the Palace of Liechtenstein stands and blesses the pastures below, both buildings are surrounded by the Vienna woods, a very deep and dark forest near to Vienna. Even today you can see the two buildings and visit them but at night time it’s very dark there and the wind blows through the trees and towers of the castle making it a very ghostly place to be.

Inside the castle the passageways wind their way through the building leading to rooms with very thick walls and small windows. Spiral staircases take you from one floor to the next and if you are very patient you can find the secret staircase that leads you to the tower.

I was very surprised about the size of the building and wanted to know more about it.

After I had been through for the first time I started to ask about it and went to the palace below to see if I could find anyone to talk to. It didn’t take me long and after I had been asking people for information someone told me about the old curator of the castle, his name was Franz and he lived in a small building at the bottom of the castle in one of it’s yards.

Franz was very old and could barely walk, but he was so talkative and liked to speak about the castle and its ghosts.

“Fantastic” I said “if there are ghosts in the building how did they come to be there, why are they haunting the castle?”

Franz was very informative and just couldn’t stop talking about it, you could see him getting younger and younger as he started to talk about “his” castle.

“In 1743 a young girl came to the palace of Liechtenstein and wanted to get ready for her wedding.... she was a beautiful young girl and as many marriages were in the 18th century she had to marry a man that she didn’t love...... she was very sad and was always thinking of her lost love.... she had grown up in a small village on the other side of Austria, a village called Himmelreich (Heaven)”.

A funny name for a village but it's true, it’s a village very near to Salzburg, have a look at the map if you don’t believe me.

Franz continued to talk and spoke about the young girl and the weeks she spent in Liechtenstein walking through the woods and crying. She became very frail and started to lose her beauty. Her hair was long and sailed through the air as she ran through the pastures on her way home to the palace. She sat in her room every evening and wrote long love letters to her beloved friend in Himmelreich.

Her future husband was far older than the young girl and although he was kind he just couldn’t make her happy, every day he would visit her and ask her to marry him but she always said..... please wait, give me time, I will marry you as soon as the moon peeps through the window on the north side of the tower.

The man went to the castle and climbed the spiral staircase and sat at the window on the north side of the tower and waited and waited...... but the moon came and went but just wouldn’t shine through the window on the north side of the tower. He too became very sad and started to become very frail too.

The days turned into weeks, the weeks turned into months....... nothing changed

Then after waiting for so many months the man started to force the young girl into a decision..... “if you don’t say yes by the time the full moon has passed the sky for the third time, I will have you taken to the dungeons of the castle where you will spend the rest of your days” he said......

The girl became very frightened and started to walk through the woods at night although everyone had warned her not to do so.

The full moon rose and climbed its way for the first time through the sky and sank again in the dawning.

She wept “Oh sweetheart come and find me here and save my soul from plight, oh sweetheart come and carry me away from here tonight”.

Again her future husband came by and said again to her .... “If you don’t say yes by the time the full moon has passed the sky for the third time, I will have you taken to the dungeons of the castle where you will spend the rest of your days”......

The full moon rose and climbed its way for the second time through the sky and sank again in the dawning.

She cried “Oh sweetheart come and find me here and save my soul from plight, oh sweetheart come and carry me away from here tonight”.

Again her future husband came by and said again to her .... “If you don’t say yes by the time the full moon has passed the sky for the third time, I will have you taken to the dungeons of the castle where you will spend the rest of your days”......

The full moon rose and climbed its way for the third time through the sky and as the moon rose and climbed its way through the sky the young girl fled from the palace into the woods and disappeared.

Since that day as the full moon rises and lights the sky on the south side of the castle a voice weeps through the walls of the castle saying.....

“Oh sweetheart come and find me here and save my soul from plight, oh sweetheart come and carry me away from here tonight”.

And if you find the secret staircase and go into the tower, you will see a frail old man sitting at the window on the north side of the tower looking out at the darkness and waiting....

....just waiting to see the moon.
