Clean Things...The Conclusion
E Rocco Caldwell

The police wouldn't believe him if he told what he thought happened to Brenda. According to his lawyer the DA was going to indict him any day. Ryan stared out at downtown Seattle from the hotel room. He sipped a dry red wine as thoughts of how Brenda's ex husband could have set him up. Maybe if he took the lie detector test it would give him time and credibility? His lawyer was against it but his lawyer believed he was guilty! What if he failed the test or the test came back inconclusive? That would be all the DA needed to have him arrested. Ryan knew he was on his own like when he was confronted by three black kids in Newark when he went to the playground! He had been fighting his entire life. He fought to get into college and fought to stay in college when others there discovered he was a Jew. He knew the world was one polluted orb filled with hate and death, the strong ate the weak and that was that! He knew eventually the murder weapon used to killed Brenda was going to end up somewhere on his property just like the jacket and the bat and Brenda's hand! The fact they hadn't found the knife meant Brenda's ex hadn't planted it yet. It was his only hope! He knew exactly where he would try to plant it.

It was raining that evening. Ryan waited just outside his house behind the hedges. He could see the yellow crime scene tape across his back door. After a few hours he was beginning to think her ex husband wasn't going to arrive when suddenly the headlights of a car flashed over his backyard. The gate opened and a dark figure in a raincoat moved over his backyard towards the house. Ryan jumped from the hedges.
"I knew it was you," Ryan yelled. Brenda's ex-husband turned and faced him.
"What do you know it's the Jew?"
"Why are you doing this to me?"
"Because she loved you." He read in Ryan's face that he was unaware of Brenda's feelings. "You didn't know she was in love with you?" He laughed. Hearing him say Brenda was in love with Ryan made Ryan feel sterile. "At first I figured on blaming Daniels but he wouldn't come to her house so I had to make myself appear like him. I made sure she would see me but just enough of me so that she would believe it was him. But when I couldn't get anyone to verify seeing them together I had to look for someone else. She would talk about you all the time and I knew you were my candidate."
"So you stole my jacket from work?"
"After I asked your co-workers questions concerning you and Brenda, it was perfect because they believed you two were involved."
"Why kill her in such a way?"
"Why not…she belonged to me, every piece of her body was mine! When you mentioned Daniels to the detectives I knew I could seal the deal. I was one of the officers searching your house. I planted the hand and took the bat! Now I'll plant the knife and kill you making it look like suicide. You are after all one unstable person!" The hell he was going to blame Ryan Goldberg for something Ryan didn't do! Ryan stopped being pushed around in grade school when he stood up to the filthy things in the world! He was going to stand up against them again. He rushed the police officer but the knife blade cut him on the right hand. The police officer kicked him in the stomach dropping him to the wet grass. The knife came down between his shoulder blades and pain erupted through out his body.

There were the swings stirring gently in the playground. The snow was to his waist…dirty snow filled with the remains of cars, garbage and Lord knew what else. He could see all of it from his parent's apartment window. They ruled the neighbor and the playground. He could only watch for some many years. His parents locked in their apartment from the danger outside it. The dirty things in life mastered…they always mastered. He closed his eyes letting death surround him and he smiled just before darkness took him.
