Reckless Nights
Laura Mndez

It was one month before graduation day, and every weekend there was a party. This wasnt a good weekend for Lizzie and Janie, best friends since they were little, but it happened. They were drinking at a party with other friends, not knowing that later Lizzie had to drive home. When it was time to go, Lizzie and Janie were drunk, but insisted going in the car. Another friend, Kate, warned them about their state, but she couldnt do anything about it because there were two against one.
Everything was going well; they were laughing and having fun . Suddenly they crashed against a tree. Immediately, people who saw the accident, took them to the hospital. Nothing serious happened to Lizzie, except that she lost her best friend. Three or maybe four days later, the police got to Lizzies house and told her parents that at the moment of the accident, Lizzie had 12% alcohol in her blood. This put Lizzie in trouble with her family and with the justice.
First, it disappointed her parents that she didnt tell them the truth from the beginning. Second, and even worse, her friend was dead because of her irresponsibility. Then, the police went to Janies house and informed her mother what happened.
When Lizzies family and Janies family went to trial, the environment was tough. Janies mother talked first, and said she wanted justice for her daughter and assured the jury that she wasnt looking for revenge. On the other side, Lizzie gave a very moving speech. She said she didnt wanted her friend to die, and that she was ready to receive any punishment for what she did. She also said to the jury that what she did was a terrible mistake and not murdered as Janies mother said before, and, therefore, she believed it wasnt fair for her to be treated as a common criminal. The judge believed her and didnt put her in jail, but made her pay for her actions. Some of the punishments she received were the following: she couldnt drive because police took her drivers license and she had to go to programs for alcoholics.
After this tragic event, Lizzies parents started to have problem, so they decided to live in separate houses. It wasnt Lizzies fault, but she was in a very difficult moment so her parents thought it was better for her to not hear their fights. This believe it or not was, at the beginning, a very hard moment to Lizzie.
Lizzies life totally changed since everyone started to look at her in a bad way. Although she was a good student, she was excluded from the graduation ceremony because there was going to be a special memorial for Janie, and Janies mother didnt want her to be there. She felt everything and everyone was against her, so she started drinking again. The only friend she really had was Kate. Kate was always there for her and helped her go through the trauma. What Kate didnt know was that Lizzie continued drinking.
Kate was Lizzies friend so when she noticed she was drinking, she tried to help. Lizzie paid no attention to it. Lizzies mother and younger sister also started suspecting because alcoholic beverages were running off. Her mother thought the only way to find out the truth was by asking Kate. When she asked Kate, she told the truth because she wanted the best for Lizzie. Her mom was really worried so she try to talked with her, but the first step of getting out of the problem was if Lizzie was honest.
At the beginning it was difficult for her to accept her problem. Then, her parents got back together, and this showed Lizzie that it is never late to change, and no matter the problems people are strong enough to beat them. Since then, she was honest with her family and apologized to Kate. She was proud of having a family and friends like the ones she had that stood there for her and put her back in reality.
Lizzies life changed again but in a positive way. She started going to the programs for alcoholic people. She had such a terrible experienced that she wanted to convey it to other people ( especially to the ones who knew Janie).
To make this dream come true, she went to her school and talked with her class and the rest of the people there. It was amazing the way she talked; it really moved peoples hearts and minds. She said that, as many of the people present there, she believed drinking and driving was never going to be a problem for her because nothing had ever happened before. She said, None of you will ever imagine the pain I have inside because of Janies death. The only thing I know is that always in my heart I will have the memory of the day she died because of a terrible mistake: drinking and driving. Although this speech would not bring Janie back, at least it would save many other lives. When the ceremony finished Lizzie found Janies mother, and what a surprise when she heard:, I dont know if I could ever forgive you for what happened with my daughter, but at least I know you are a great person that is doing the correct things. Please, for you and for Janie, help people so they dont make the same mistake. I know Janie loves you and wants you to be happy.
