Desk Lunch Part 1
D G Williford

She sat at her gray desk looking through the glass partitions
into the next cubicle that they called offices.
Everyone was at lunch. She could hear the janitors talking.
“You checked the girls room yet? I noticed it was
just ‘bout out of paper earlier.
I’ll get this if you get the trashcans.”

She looked at her trashcan and it was in need of a good dump.

Her desk was cluttered with family pictures,
some in snow, some at the beach.
There were stuffed animals that
made squeaky noises to relieve stress,
healing garden moisture-rich body toning spray, Bath & Body Works antibacterial hand wash among other things.

She was about twenty six pounds overweight.
She cared, but not enough to stop eating
her two piece fish and more from Long John Silver’s.

Her highlighted cropped hair needed highlighting again.
The gray was showing through.
The lines around her eyes and mouth were
pushing her towards botox treatments,
but being a hypochondriac, she couldn’t risk the side effects.

She was jumpy from too much wine and nicotine last night.
Thank God her one on one meeting
with her manager was yesterday and not today.
She would be standing in the unemployment line.

She took another bite of her coleslaw in the
styrofoam cup and continued checking her voice mails.
She pressed 2 to listen to her messages.
“Ms. Williford, I just wanted to call and
let you know that I signed up for the paper
at Bi-Lo and the girl told me that I was going
to be gettin’ a free comic umbrella and I never got one.
She was a real pretty black woman, short with a gold cane.
Could you please call me at 555-4723 as soon as you get this?”

     “Shit, another one.” She thought.

“ I’m going to have to talk to her again, dammit.”
She slammed the phone down and went back to her fish and more.

Thank God it was payday. She had negative $43.24
in her checking account and had borrowed
the money to get the fish and more.

“They never give me enough fucking tartar sauce”.
She threw the last plastic pack in the trash
along with the other garbage.

She didn’t know that before the end of the day,
she wouldn’t give a shit about tartar sauce or
anything else for that matter.

"Well Well... sunny-- Since you slammed Desk Lunch Part 4 without reading Part 1 I can understand how you weren't attune to the them of the piece. Now that you have started from the beginning arrow, maybe you can get to Part 4 and appreciate my efforts and constructively criticize them from there. Thanks for reading this, I think. " -- Author.
