David B Doc Byron

I got one of those ''legal aid''lawyers again,
justlike the last time.
I couldn't afford a lawyer of my own choice, living
on the street and all.
They busted me crossing the street against a red
light. I was drunk, too, which didn't help matters
much.
But, it was what they found inside my purse that
really ''incriminated'' me.
A human face.

Well, not the whole face; just the skin.
I left the eyes, nose, and mouth. I already had
pretty eyes anyway.
Really,I do.
My lawyer, a young, good looking guy in his late
twenties, asked me why I sliced the face off the
young girl. I told him because she was pretty, and
I wanted to be pretty just like her. And,obviously,
because I'm ugly, a freak of nature. I needed a
new face.

My lawyer just forced a smile, said he didn't think
I was ugly at all.
ButI know he was just saying that to be nice, make
me feel more at ease, so I wouldn't freak out or
anything. He was just scared.
I was born ugly.
My mom told me when I was a little kid that I'd
been born with some kind of skin disease, like
leprosy. She told me it would probably get worse as
I grew up.
She was right.
But, I'm still pretty on the inside. Or at least
I was back then.

My mama was a whore, sold her body on the street.
But I didn't fault her for that;she had to make a
living,feed us.
It wasn't what she'd done; it was how she did it.
She'd make me wear a Halloween mask so nobody
could see my face,my REAL face, then make me watch
her doing it with her johns. After they'd left,
she'd told me that I'd better have been paying
close attention to what she'd just done, because
it would be how I made my living someday.

My lawyer asked me why my mama made me do that,
watch them and all.
I told him because she was crazy, strung out on
drugs and booze. That's how she died, too. An
overdose.
I was only twelve years old then.
They sent me off to a foster home, where my ''brother,''
would call me hurtful names, and molest me.
He'd tell me I had a nice body, just an ugly face.
Then he'd put a paper bag over my head with holes
cut in it so I could breathe, then he'd sodomize
me.

When I was fifteen, I ran away, started living
on the streets,whoring to survive.
Just like my mama.
My mama was really pretty, though.I wished I could
have looked more like her, at least on the outside.
While I was talking to my lawyer, a court appointed
shrink came in, started asking me alot of questions.
Personal things, about myself. PRIVATE stuff.
My lawyer, the little weasel, he didn't do anything,
just let the shrink keep on prying. I knew he wasn't
nice, just wearing a friendly face, a MASK, to hide
who and what he really was.
Me? I don't have to wear a mask;what you see is
what you get,inside,OR out.
Nice. Really good hearted.
Or, at least I WAS.

My shrink asks me what happened that night in
the park, with the pretty girl.
I told him I was just standing there minding my own
business, when this pretty girl wearing skin tight
spandex pants and a tube top comes riding by on a
bike, and pooches her ass up in the air like she
wants me to kiss it.
I wanted to kick it.
She was calling me names, like freako and Frankenstien, shit like that.
People did that to me all the time, even my johns.
It really hurts when it comes from a guy, you know?
Anyway, I pick up this empty wine bottle, and throw
it at her, hitting her in the head, knocking her
pretty ass right off the bike, and knocking her out
cold.
That's when I slit her throat with a piece of
the broken bottle, then sliced off her face.
A pretty face; not ugly, like mine.

My shrink told me it was time to see the judge.
I walked into the courtroom and the presiding
judge wouldn't even look at me.
It was fine with me, because I didn't want to look
at him either. He was fat and bald, and ugly, too.
Just like me.
I got sentenced to five years in a mental hospital
this time.
But,if I'm a good girl, I could get out on good
behavior in half that time.

Then I'll go back to the streets, to my home.
And I'll find another pretty face, and keep it this
time, won't get caught with it.
Then I'll be pretty, and won't have to wear cheap
masks anymore, like I did when I was a kid.
I'll wear HER face.
Then I'll be pretty forever and ever and ever.

At least on the outside.

"I really like the tone and dialogue, good story, too, I could hear her voice in my head, visualize her sitting on a metal bunk in the lock-up ... Great job, Doc!" -- Judith.
"Okay, man, mucho mucho praise! This is really the kind of stuff i'm trying to write at the moment and it's really good to see it done so wellhere (hell knows I can't write like that). There is a lot of passion there and I can sense it so... that's 'bout it. Good, disturbing, work." -- Rowan Davies.
