Anne
Sue (Sooz) Simpson

Annes great, everybody says so. Shes a real people person. A party doesnt start until Anne walks into the room; picnics wouldnt be the same without her. Her name is on the top of everybodys invitation list.

Shes a natural comic, her list of personal disasters is endless and she regales these stories with an effortless wit that has people rolling on the floor. Annes a real mock drama queen, and hurls herself from one trauma to the next, delighting in each incident, and never once losing the grin that says, Now this is more like it, somethings finally happening. Her greatest enemy is boredom, and she always strives to stay that one step ahead of it.

Nobody would ever describe Anne as beautiful, but what she lacked in looks, she oozed in charisma. When last measured Anne stood at 5 foot 11 and a half, and laughed unashamedly when the scales tipped 15 Stone 4. Hell Im Aaaaaaall woman, She announced to the bystanders in the gym. She was always immensely proud of her 40 DD bust, and missed no opportunity to shimmy, and when Anne shimmied the world stood still, and all eyes turned to watch. She was rather boyish in looks, short cropped black hair, and a big broad frame, which in its time had hefted many a piece of furniture. The mainstay of her wardrobe was her jeans and jumpers, and she was rarely to be seen in anything else. The ensemble invariably finished with a pair of black Dr. Marten Shoes, big sturdy walking shoes for when she traipsed into town everyday. Her voice was loud, though not raucous or grating, when she spoke, people listened to what she had to say, and when she laughed, which was often, the world laughed with her.

Anne had time for people, Her door was always open and you always got the same greeting Come on in love, the kettles on, excuse the mess, bloody kids whod have `em Then youd sit comfortably at her kitchen table, muching distractedly on chocolate digestives, and pour out your troubles. Anne would listen, instantly find humour in there somewhere and make a joke or two, before giving some sound advice such as Aaahh sod him. Hes only a man! Youd leave feeling, well, if not exactly absolved of your problems then at least a little lighter of spirit.

Anne hailed from Yorkshire. Broad northern lass as her dad would say. This made her, to the point, and blunt, and if people didnt like it then that was their loss. She had a second voice that she would adopt, many times throughout any conversation. It could best be described as her Benny Hill voice. She would go into character, heave up her bosom, and go into her eee by gum bit Eee my Bobbys a good man you know, doesnt move much though. If he jumped in his sleep, hed need a nap to recover. We thought hed died once and called the Undertaker, but hed only paused between sentences.

Poor Bobby was the brunt of many of her jokes, but she was right, he was a good man, and didnt mind in the slightest. They had a good marriage, Though if Anne were to tell the truth shed have to admit to craving a little more excitement in her life. Bobby would fade into the shadows, but he was the Wind beneath her wings, and she would have been devastated without him.

They were an average family, of average education, living in an average house. Bobby a small, slim man was a blue-collar worker, Anne worked in a pub several evenings a week and was a great favourite of all the regulars. They had two children a boy, Ben seven, and a girl Louise, four. Life was far too average for our Anne.

Anne died last year leaving a void the size of the black hole of Calcutta in Bobby and the kids lives. She bought a motor bike and rode it too hard, too fast into a corner that didnt yield. Her coffin bore a wreath of red and white carnations saying Mum shed have liked that. All shed wanted was a bit of innocent excitement.

DISCLAIMER: STORYMANIA DOES NOT PROVIDE AND IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR REVIEWS. ALL REVIEWS ARE PROVIDED BY NON-ASSOCIATED VISITORS, REGARDLESS OF THE WAY THEY CALL THEMSELVES.

"An interesting character study? But if this is a true tale a sad story Sooz!" -- Monte.
"This is a wonderful piece. I can really see that poor woman sitting right in front of me. It ends rather abruptly, but other than that..." -- pearl.
"Nope not a true story. It started off as an excersise in characterisation when I was trying to teach myself how to 'build' characters. As far as I'm aware the fictious Anne is alive and well and terrorising North Yorkshire." -- Sooz, Dalton-in-furness, England, Cumbria.
"Thanks both :-)" -- Sooz, Dalton, England, Cumbria.
"I once read that characters have to be real enough to cast shadows. I think your hefty Anne certainly does that, and for more reasons than her weight. Well done, though I wouldn't mind seeing her in another, longer story with a different ending." -- Deon.
