I was the fifteenth of the month again, and
time to go visit dad.
He was doing time in Haysville prison on assault
charges, 1 to 3 years, even with good behaviour.
The outlook for him was bleak, the atmosphere
around our house dismal at best.
As I waited for mom to finish crying, I went
to my sister's room to see if she was ready. She
always moved slow on visitation day, seemed to
dread going to see dad.
I didn't blame her; I wasn't in any hurry to get
there myself.

I knocked on her door, waited; no answer, as
usual.
I pushed the door open slowly, to see her sitting
on the edge of the bed, her face expressionless,
her blank eyes staring out at nothing. She was
always like this anymore, but especially on
visitation day.
''Sis?'' I said, attempting to get her attention,
even if only briefly.
She didn't answer, as usual.
''Sis? He really wants to see you, Sis.''
Nothing. No reaction of any kind, not even a
blinking of an eye, a twitch of facial muscle. She
sits there like a statue.
''Please, Sis. Put on some decent clothes, and
get ready. We're leaving in about five minutes.''
Still no reaction. I leave her room, go check on
mom.

Mom is sitting in front of her bedroom mirror,
wiping tear stained makeup from her cheeks, and
sniffling, sobbing.
''Mom?''
''Yes, Johnny?''
''It's almost time to go. You about ready?''
''In a minute. Is Lisa ready to go?''
I hated to tell her the truth. Again.
''Well, Ma, shes-''
''Shes not ready, is she?!'' Mom blurts out, her
bloodshot eyes now full of anger. ''Just who in the
hell does she think she is?''
''Calm down, Mom,'' I said. ''If she doesn't want to go,
to go, we can't force her. She is eighteen years
old, you know.''
''Okay, Mr. Know it all. What do we tell your dad?''
''Tell him shes sick....has the stomach flu, or
something.''

''The way she was ''sick'' the last five or six
times?'' Mom retorted. ''Shes his own flesh and
blood, for Christs sake.''
''I know, mom. I know.''
Mom turns back to face the mirror again. ''Tell Lisa
shes going, and that's final!''
''Okay, Mom.''

Lisa ends up going under protest, but she goes.
The mood in the car is a somber one, and we ride
in an uncomfortable silence all the way there.
As we pulled up to the gates, I was almost glad to
be there, glad to get out of the car.
As usual, upon entering, we are told by a tall,
buzzcut guard with tattoos on both massive forearms
to go sit in the waiting area. my dad will be out
in a minute.

Mom sits waiting impatiently, chain smoking and
fidgeting with her purse straps.
Lisa just sits there next to mom, staring out at
nothing, her lower lip quivering as if shes about
to cry. Shes always like that when she comes here.
A moment later, my dad comes out, his skin pale, his
bloodshot eyes trying to focus.
He's been in solitary confinement for almost three
weeks now, he'd told mom over the phone. Had busted
some young punk in the mouth over something I'm
sure had been trivial at best, like a pack of
smokes, or a candy bar.
As he approaches us, his wrists and ankles still
shackled together, Lisa is his first priority.
''Hiya baby!'' he says, with a big smile. ''Hows
my little pumpkin today?!''
Lisa says nothing, shows no reaction of any kind,
just sits there like a stone statue.

Getting no reaction, he turns to me and mom,
who's already crying tears of joy as she wraps her
arms around my dad, smothers him with kisses.
I watch dad getting all of this affection, and I
feel sickened, repulsed.
Sometimes I just want to let it all hang out, tell
mom about everything I know, everything that Lisa
knows, about my ....dad.
But, I know how much it would hurt mom, break
her heart, almost KILL her, if she knew.
If she'd known about what dad was doing to Lisa
all of those years after he'd come out of prison
the first time, as if being in prison had turned
him into a freak.
I'll never forget the first time I saw it; I had
been walking past Lisa's room on the way to the
bathroom, just happened to glance over at Lisa's open
doorway.
Mom was gone that night, to a bingo game.
I saw Lisa, little twelve year old Lisa, laying
there naked underneath my dad, as he huffed and
puffed and grunted and moved around on top of her,
Lisa just laying there and staring off at nothing
just like she does now.

Staring off at nothing, Lisa inside her own little
world, inside her world of solitary confinement,
where nobody can hurt her anymore.

That's why I had turned dad in on the assault
charges; he'd come home drunk, bragging about
beating some poor guy half to death over a pool game.
Because I knew they'd arrest him, lock him away
where he couldn't hurt Lisa anymore.

The visit was finally over, and we left dad
standing there, his wrists and ankles shackled
together like a wild animal, mom looking back over
shoulder every few seconds and blowing kisses to
him, tears welling up in her eyes.
On the ride back home, my mom driving now, she
glances up in the rear view, saying,'' Jesus, Lisa.
Your own flesh and blood. Jeeeee-zus.'' Then she
shakes her head in disgust, focuses her eyes on the
road again.

In the back seat, I gently take Lisa's hand
in mine, give it a little squeeze, and say, ''I
love you, Sis. I sure wish I could make you smile.''
She says nothing, just sits there, staring out the
window as the world outside passes by like a blur.

She hasn't smiled for a long time, and I'm beginning to
wonder if she ever will again.

Not for a long, long time.
