God's Hiding Place
Lawrence Peters

God looked out his window and watched the towers fall.
He made himself another cup of espresso and as he moved
some things around the table a tear rolled down his face
and fell on the newspaper he had been reading. He sat
down, wanting to be someplace else, but knew he had to
be in the one place that people that day would need him.

God went looking around his farm for the lost lamb and
found it, caught in a bit of underbrush, and he
untangled her. His neighbors, seeing him walk back to
the farmhouse with the lamb wrapped around his neck,
smiled and said to themselves that the scene had seemed
somehow familiar.

God highsided his motorcycle three laps from the end of
the race at Laguna Seca as he was battling for third. He
flew through the air, the protective suit doing its job
and he limped off into the waiting arms of the
cornerworkers. Looking back at the destroyed remains of
his bike, he smiled at the cornerworkers and said "Hey,
I hope that was as exciting for you to watch as it was
for me to do." They laughed, and talked afterward always
at his bravery.

God held the newborn baby in his hands and raised it to
the sky. He took it to the emergency room and left it on
a bench swaddled in his jacket. It was a long day, but
he didn't mind. He had done more in less.
