A compact Spaceship,floats dead,amidst the neverending
sea of stars.
INT.COCKPIT-SPACESHIP
A bearded man,early 40's,is seated in the cockpit,of
the dead ship.He appears,to be sleep.
MAN(V.O)
My name is Jonah.Jonah Smith.Cast your eyes,upon a fool,
if you will.A fool that sought,the impossible.I was a
Scientist once,long ago.One that grew tired,of the
mundane,simplicity of Human existence.I craved something
more...i craved Immortality.So i left,in pursuit of it.
EXT.EARTH LIKE WORLD
A small Spacecraft,speeds out of the large,blue world's
atmosphere,and speeds into the blackness,of space.
INT.COCKPIT-SPACESHIP
Jonah sets in the cockpit.Observing the computer monitors,
on the control console.As they are continually streaming
information.Jonah stares,out of the ship's viewport,at the
infinite sea of stars,spread out before him.
JONAH( V.O)
I had left behind,everyone and everything,that i knew.
I had embarked upon,my quest to find,Eternal life.I
traveled to the farthest reaches of the galaxy.In
search of enlightened civilizations.But sadly,my search
would yield,no results.
MONTAGE:
Jonah's ship,speeds through space,landing on all sorts
of of Alien worlds.Ice Worlds,Desert Worlds,and Jungle
Worlds.But each planet,he lands on,all he finds,are the
ruins,of once glorious Civilizations.
JONAH(V.O)
For every world,i found,all that was there to greet me,
was death and decay.The inhabitants,of these once
glorious Jewels of the universe,now all but gone.Victims
of Disease,Famine,or Warfare.But the cold horrible truth,
did not set in,until my next find...
EXT.RUINED METROPOLIS-NIGHT
Jonah stands amidst,the ruins of a once vast Metropolis.
Now it's towering skyscrapers,just towering remnants,of
their former glory.Looming over him,beneath the star
filled nightsky.
JONAH(V.O)
It was here,upon this dead world,where i came to the
conclusion,that Immortality does not exist.It is the
fate of all things,to return to dust.I had been a
fool.After all these long years,of searching for that
elusive dream,that was Immortality,i had come to realize,
that i sought...the impossible.
Jonah walks back,to his small Ship,and climbs in.
Afterward,the Ship,rises into the air,a few feet,
and then speeds,back into outerspace.Leaving the
dead World behind.
INT.COCKPIT-SPACESHIP
Jonah is seated,in the cockpit.He flips off his
Ship's,navigational controls.Which causes his
Ship, to travel through space aimlessy.
JONAH(V.O)
I did not care anymore.What i had attempted to attain,
i could not.If i could not have Immortality...i would
have nothing at all.
EXT.SPACESHIP-SPACE
The small Ship,is constantly accellerating,through
space!Countless billions of starspecks,streak past,
as the ship,speeds through the Galaxy,at fantastic
speeds!
JONAH(V.O)
I was angry.Angry at the cosmos,which lasted for eternity.
It seemed,to be laughing,at me.Laughing at the pathetic
Mortal,who sought,what he could not have.
EXT.SPACESHIP-SPACE
The Ship exits,light Speed.Entering a different part,
of the Galaxy.
JONAH(V.O)
Overtime,the Ship had ventured,far into the Cosmos.
Far,far away,from any civilized Starsystems.The Ship's
life support systems,reserve cells,were nearly diminished.
And the Hyperlight,Engine Reserves,were depleted.
INT.COCKPIT-SPACESHIP
Jonah sets in the cockpit,as his Ship,drifts dead in
space.
JONAH(V.O)
I had accepted my fate.I was going to die.Out here,all
alone.Amidst the neverending sea of Stars.But as the
Ship's,life support systems were waning,and the last,of
the Ship's power reserves,were being depleted,something
amazing happened!
EXT.SPACESHIP-SPACE
The Ship is being pulled,through Space,by an unseen
power!Pulling it towards,a huge World,shrouded in
Darkness!
INT.COCKPIT-SPACESHIP
Jonah sets in the cockpit,staring in amazement!
JONAH(V.O)
It seemed the universe,had chosen a different fate
for me! I was not to perish slowly,before my audience:
The Universe.No,my fate would be different!
EXT.DARK PLANET
The Ship dissapears,into the atmosphere,of the Planet's
nightside.
JONAH(V.O)
Guided down,into the unknown,i was.What i would find
next,i could not fathom.
EXT.GREAT METROPOLIS-DAWN
The Ship is setting,on a great Causeway.Which leads
towards a grand Metropolis.It's buildings,extending
into the heavens.
EXT.SPACESHIP-CAUSEWAY-DAWN
Jonah sets inside,of his Ship.Beholding the great
Metropolis!
JONAH(V.O)
Here it was.An ancient Metropolis,perfectly intact!
It had not been, inhabitated for countless centuries!
But yet,here it was.Setting beneath the sunrise,of
this Alien World.
EXT.SPACESHIP- CAUSEWAY
Jonah climbs out, of his Ship.
JONAH(V.O)
But,there was something,strange at work.The City knew
me somehow.It knew my name.It called to me,and i had
to follow.
Jonah leaves his Ship,and proceeds towards,the great
Metropolis.
EXT.METROPOLIS-DAY
Jonah,walks through the city.
INT.GREAT ROOM
Jonah enters a great room.Where he finds,a strange
device.Similar to a Sarcophagus.Strange Text,align
the sides of it.
JONAH(V.O)
It seemed that fate,had found me.This strange device,
built long ago,by strange unknown Craftsmen,had been
resting for centuries,on this dead World.Patiently
awaiting me:This vagabond of the Universe,which i
had become.
Jonah stands,staring at the strange Device.Admiring
it's beauty,while running his hands,over it's
smooth exterior.
JONAH(V.O)
As i stood there,admiring the strange Alien device
craftsmanship,somehow i knew it.And it knew me.I
had all the questions...and it had,all the answers.
It bade me enter,and i did.
Jonah,lies inside of the device.
JONAH(V.O)
At once,i felt at home.Truly at peace.I slept.But not
a normal sleep...no,i traveled.I beheld strange distant
places,and races!I saw the fantastic!The hidden secret
things!The past,present,and future,became as one!
Jonah is lying inside,the box asleep.
JONAH(V.O)
I had found,the unattainable,here on this dead World.
I had found, my true home.I had attained,that long
sought dream:Immortality.And so i slept,the sleep of
ages.
PAUSE
JONAH(V.O)
Succumbing to the wills,of the Alien device.Slipping
further and further away,from the universe,of the
mundane.For i had become...the Dreamer!
FADE TO BLACK.
THE END.

"This turned out to be a be pretty good short script. I've never written one before, so I wouldn't necessarily know where to begin in terms of critique, but I can remember reading another of yours (The Doormasters?) and from what I gather you just plot the story around one central theme or something? The theme in this one was immortality and one man's search for immortality and the subsequent trials that presents. I have to say, you executed it pretty well as I did enjoy reading it. On a sidenote, I did buy that screenplay book that you suggested (How Not To Write Screenplays) so perhaps there is something that can guide me on how to write a short screenplay?
