Free At Last
Arthur Henry Isaacson

After all those years trying to survive
All those times I surrendered myself
For peace
All that sliding from love
To endless bickering
All the bitterness that seemed to grow
Spontaneously from nowhere
Sleepless nights and dreary days
Grayed by the weight of children considered
Tortured by the results certain to be inflicted
After an eternity of fear and contemplation
Of a future without dignity
Of an unbearable emotional darkness
If I stayed
After all of that
Finally
I was free
Only to discover
Freedom has its own kind of pain

"Rhythm and flow somewhat awkward but the words paint a clear picture. Been there; felt that; It's all so true." -- DK, Ohio.
"Ah. My parents are going through a divorce. And I, as a witness, can say that these things are true. All I can say is that I'm glad I will be gone in a few short years. Nice work on the poem." -- Kimberly De Liz.
