a pocketful of posies

all fall down...

now they fall away
returning to this place
it seems like yesterday.
Dark verandah, forbidding
hidden from the road
guarding many secrets
of this evil abode.
Tainted windows reflecting
pain deep within a soul
innocence violated
..no longer whole.
Wisteria bough now overgrown
droops wearily around
spilled tears of lavender
scattered on the ground.
Little girl in party dress
frills twirling at her knees
weaving ribbons round the maypole
ringlets dancing in the breeze.
Uncle Joe watching
through glassy smiling eyes
party clown, painted face
the perfect disguise.
Beneath the old gum tree
childhood swing still hangs
swing me high...higher
away from probing hands.
