The Form Of Poetry Mason Cole
What exactly is a poem? It's a profound mystery,
But here's a small selection of the things true verse can be...
A poem is a memory of many, many things,
The beauty and the heartache that all life does dearly hold,
Perception on perception, given words to act as wings,
Preserved upon the written page timeworn with bend and fold,
A messenger through ages of the feelings living brings.
A poem is a window to the poet's very soul,
Their fears, their lies, their loves and laughs and lifelong hapless doubts
Will all pick up the writing pen, and in some way control
The poet's rhythmic one-two punch and measured metric clouts,
Allowing words into the mind to burrow like a mole.
A poem is a storehouse full of artifacts galore,
From Casey's bat to Seuss' hat and other treasures too:
A burning deck, two belfry lamps, a Light Brigade at war,
A signet ring, and roads in woods, and horns of boys in blue,
And every poem written will increase its varied store.
A poem is a journal that reflects its time of birth,
Where politics and government may have their proper say;
The revolutions of the mind affecting all the earth
Become transcriber forever, and thus show the shining way
To a time when all humanity will sing its song of mirth.
A poem is a crystal ball that wondrously stays clear,
Free of dirty smudges and the fingerprints of time,
Charting courses past to plot the future coming year,
Helping men to do away with vice and peer through rhyme,
Beholding all the paths, now lost, so torturously near.
A poem is a signpost, or a marker on the road,
Providing inspiration for the coming of the dawn,
Not afraid to deal in truth, and helping with our load,
Picking up our soul, and helping us to carry on,
And fostering new legacies sprung from the seeds it sowed.
But think of one bright shining gem that glitters without end.
That is the poem's proudest form: a timeless, valued friend.
