Downtown: One Eye
R Bennett Okerstrom

One Eye.
A gentle giant.
You roost on the flower bed in front of the Comerica building at Lafayette and Cass,
bothering not a soul, never asking for any handouts.
How do you survive without a job?
How can you relax in the same place everyday, without begging for change?
One Eye.
Your name speaks for itself.
Often clad in a Michigan State sweatshirt that a generous Spartan gave you on a cold November morning on the streets of Detroit.
Your hat pulled close to your good eye, shading it from the blinding sun.
One Eye.
You tote a duffle bag, but nobody knows what lies inside.
You chat with the security officers at the bank and carry on conversation as if you once were schooled at least through high school.
One Eye.
Always polite.
You say hello to me when I pass you by.
You never harass me or ask for change.
Why is that?
If I ask you to leave from your flower bed, you get up and walk away without a single complaint.
One Eye.
Where do you sleep?
What do you eat?
Where do you go when I ask you to leave?
I don't understand.
One Eye.
What happened in your life that transformed you into the gentle cyclops that you are?
One day I too will carry on a conversation with you.
I will ascertain what forces have created such a somber spirit.
I will learn about you, One Eye.
Only then will I understand.
