Howling Child Anndoc
Howling Child
If courage is the art of not showing your fear
Then I am a master with a black belt.
Raised with no right to hurt,
No right to say what I felt,
No right to ask or need.
Even growing was wrong.
A good girl does as they are told.
I run recklessly ahead for it doesn’t matter
Where there can be no fear
There is no need for caution,
So, I swallow my uncertainty
And banish the howling child inside
Forge ahead with a smile and a “certainly”
Fresh from my lips.
We met.
Admiration lit your eyes
Warmed my heart, melted the locks on my need.
I gave you my hopes, my fears, my longings, my joy.
I gave you my heart.
And for a while, you held it safe
And I asked and you gave
And we felt it all together.
I tried to be a good girl,
To carry it all and make it work
To keep my heart light and
To burden no one with my need
When there was an overwhelming load
To not let it overrun us all.
Somewhere, somehow
Our feet diverged and though you carried my heart,
You felt it not, the pull and pain
As it moved farther and farther away.
And the child inside me howled again
For we are afraid of the dark.
