Life On The Brink Of Death
Mike Schiller

And so they come back again
They keep coming back
Relentless persecution
Unfolds as I am the victim of
An unstoppable campaign of destruction
For nine months Ive managed to survive
Their every attempt to destroy me
But they wont stop
They will never stop until they kill me
My death is all they seek and for nothing
Absolutely nothing
They conduct themselves like
a bizarre terrorist hit squad
A cult of death
With a twisted and perverse perspective
They do not feel, they do not care
They have no remorse, no guilt
No conscience
They dont question their objectives
No attempt made to discern right from wrong
They know absolutely nothing about me
Yet they believe they know enough to order my death
Warped and sadistic, they track me down
Staging an endless series of senseless
Assassination attempts
I am still alive but I dont know for how long
How long I will be able to continue like this
They will not stop, they will never stop
I have never endured a greater nightmare
Never experienced greater danger
And Im taking this quite well, all things considered
Ive retained my sanity and clarity of thought
But I have spent nine months dodging
their attempts to murder me in cold blood
I am terrified that at some point they may
Eventually succeed
I have tried and tried to call out for help
In some cases, some have tried to help
But nobody truly grasps what these people
Are trying to do
Nobody understands the magnitude of the danger I face
No matter where I go, no matter what I do
These people are determined to cut my life short
I am in essence alone because I am the sole target
Only I must face this danger
Which persists for every hour of every day
At any given moment,
My life remains in jeopardy
For months now,
my life has been flashing before my eyes
every precious memory has come back to me
with full clarity as I remember the
moments that make life worth living
the moments for which I now struggle
to remain alive
so that I can continue to have moments like those
and continue to remember the moments Ive had
I want desperately for these people to leave me alone
And let me go on with my life
But they wont go, they keep following me
I wonder if there is any place I can hide
Any safe refuge from the sheer evil hatred
Of these god forsaken contract killers
My life may end tomorrow or the next day
I dont know. I have no way of knowing
what will ultimately happen to me.
I am terrified
For nine months they have relentlessly tried to kill me
And for nine months I have miraculously
Survived their every attempt on my life
But I dont know how this will end
If I die my death will be in vain
Absolutely purposeless and unnecessary
For nothing. For no reason.
For some sick individuals perverse enjoyment.
This may be the last poem I ever write.
