When leafy trees are motionless,
and cool still air no breeze perturbs,
a wind blows through the emptiness,
from starry paths no dark disturbs.
When silence lies on fields and hills,
and not one sound can sharp ears hear,
a sil'vry song it's soft tones spills,
and noiselessly,it's bright flames sear.
When lifeless stones fill up the plain,
and living things are far away,
a bright sylph dances in the rain,
her eyes in tears, her footsteps gay.
But when time stops its headlong flight,
strange wordless words rise from the deep,
and veiled woods come into sight,
as depths enfold our waking sleep.
Rain
Oh rain! from what strange lonely way,
do come your tattered, worn out feet?
your travel cloak of dusty grey,
hangs limp and torn, with dirt replete.
My dear forsaken wanderer,
don't think I do not understand,
why droops your hood the heavier,
and hides your eyes from all the land.
A terror your grey tatters hide.
my fingers tremble with a fear
and wonder I can scarce abide,
at sight of your torn mantle drear.
And if your face would see the light,
in it we'd see,but all too clear,
that timeless terror,glowing bright,
whose mere beggining we can't bear.
The Dragon
A wooden wall stares back at me,
and lurking in it's depths I see-
a dragon pulling on his chain,
a dragon one cannot restrain.
A lamp glows softly,cautiously,
and mirrored in it's light I see-
a dragon writhing in great pain,
a dragon one cannot detain.
A curtain ripples lazily,
and in it's languid folds I see-
a dragon pulling on his rein,
a dragon none has ever slain.
I raise my cold hand nervously,
but close my eyes when I first see-
a dragon one cannot contain,
whose eyes conceal an awful bane.
The Storm
Dark waves are slowly gathering,
amid the cold night's silent gloom.
the wind's eyes,dark and threatening,
do icily unleash my doom.
my ship, you see,is old and worn,
the crew have all deserted me.
its once bright sails hang loose and torn,
its steering is a mystery.
Oh storm-wind fierce,and raging wave!
before you claim my ship and me,
an answer to my plea I crave-
what lies in the depths of the sea?
with foaming claw,and wrathful fist,
you tear my ship and reach for me.
there falls unto my eyes a mist.
what lies in the depths of the sea?
A Snowy Morning
the shimm'ring sun-rays of a frosty dawn,
do lightly dance on newly fallen snow.
grave, ancient oaks, and slender firs all glow,
in cloaks that hallowed silence rests upon.
the twir'ling, twisting boughs and branches are,
the arching turrets, and strange sloping walls,
of ancient palaces,primeval halls,
whose rooms are lit by a forgotten star.
why does a heavy mist descend,
what bright winged wind blows through the trees?
why does the snow in waves ascend,
who has unleashed the foaming seas?
what silver sandalled feet tread airily?
what ripp'ling hair like moonlit rivers winds?
and who is there who can in truth tell me-
what faceless face the flaming sun's eyes blinds?
A Dream
oh sleep time, sleep, your stern eyes close,
and in your glitt'ring halls repose.
this moment,see,
is dear to me,
and I will weep so,if it goes.
and when your velvet robes but stir,
this airy,bright-eyed dream will blur,
and fly away,
on swift wings fay,
to realms of tears and gossamer.
this strangly lit,deserted hall,
where longing weeps,fair as nightfall,
and gems of yore,
gleam from the floor,
will vanish,like a last footfall.
so sleep time, sleep, your stern eyes close,
and in your glitt'ring halls repose.
this moment ,see,
is dear to me,
so wake not from your blessed doze.
Tears
Begone now! all you visions fair,
bright stars of bless'd delirium,
and dancing dreams as light as air,
for where I go you may not come.
through darkened paths, where cold winds blow,
and silence like a sharp sword stabs,
is where,alone,I must now go,
ere fell obliv'ion my hand grabs.
I'll sit then by a tall dark tree,
for wounds and tears a fitting place.
the morning lies,so fair and free,
but night has truth etched on his face.
