“Here ye, here ye, come one, come all.
Attend ye to listen. Here enter the hall.
Come elves, come fairies, come kings from afar.
Come travelers from Darkover and far Valdemar.
Here you will find comfortable seats, good food, fine wine & spectacular treats.”
The voice carried far, over each creature
Who was milling about, awaiting the main feature.
Members they were of the long secret society.
Beings of the science fiction and fantasy variety.
Some had traveled through time or simply through space, to be sure and arrive at this specified place.
“The fabled Red Dragon soon will appear
with a new tale to tell. Come quickly to hear.
The meeting will start soon, so don’t you delay.
You won’t want to miss it. Please right this way.”
Sprites and spacemen began going in, greeting the other, each with a grin.
Upon entering the hall each guest was now greeted
By a group of pink pixies and this litany repeated.
“Please follow the wil’ o wisp to find your right table.
We’ll be serving you food as soon as we’re able.”
Loud songs and fine ale quickly did flow, with dwarves trading tales and the occasional blow.
The meal was served quickly, to each guest a full plate.
Including the griffins, some elves and a wraith.
Each creature consumed their most favorite dish,
Being magically supplied by a wizardly fish.
The banquet continued on for some time, ‘til the Dragon’s arrival was announced with a chime.
A hush quickly fell over all who had gathered.
At the dragons’ approach nothing else mattered.
As he approached the stage he made the floor squeak.
“Good evening to all and thanks for having me speak.
A place worth the showing, this promise I keep and I’ll try not to put you too quickly to sleep.”
“This is a gathering of the creatures and mages
Created through the years in the thousands of pages
Of manuscripts written, published and read,
By all grateful fans, both living and dead.
The worlds that you spring from are many and varied. Your power grows daily, your fame’s great already.”
“You have worked to save worlds, save lives, and save face.
You’ve used magic and knowledge to build a safe place.
Now I offer to you a new realm you can visit.
With many a servant you’ll be pampered in it.
Little travel is needed, no danger to mind. Restful and quiet and easy to find.”
With a wave of his claw a portal appeared
Showing a valley with a town and a tower quite near.
Hot springs in the distance wafted steam in the air
While visitors strolled gardens without any care.
“Here you will find a marvelous place, to meet and to mingle with many a race.”
“So I invite you to come, visit and play.
Each morning well rested greeting the day.
Relax and enjoy a well-deserved break.
Try some new food, perhaps even a steak.
“My fee for this service is really quite small, a new story from you for my treasure is all.”
This announcement created quite a stir with the guests.
A resort they could visit, a place they could rest.
No battles to fight, no kingdom to save,
No riots to quell, no hiding in caves.
This new idea was quickly embraced. The questions were many, some shouted in haste.
The Red Dragon waited for the noise to abate
Then smiled as he quickly closed down his gate.
Then small dragons appeared from out of thin air
And handed out brochures with infinite care.
“This brochure has instructions on how to proceed, please visit my realm whenever you need.”
“Again thank you for coming and have a good night.
Then the Red Dragon smiled as he vanished from sight.
So ended the meeting with more drink and more talk.
Until some in attendance could not even walk.
The Dragon’s collection grew large through the ages as stories were added by creatures and mages.

"This was so good. It flowed exceptionally well. I was wondering whatever happened to the anthology and why haven't you posted any more stories? You certainly have a flair for writing, and if your work gets highlighted on a site such as this you're bound to get better. Just thought I'd offer a little encouragement. All us wanna-be writers need that from time to time. Keep up the magnificence." -- Michael Harris, Detroit.
