Cotton birds of purple and orange
suspend in formation over the Chinatis,
as the fireball drops away
warming the slopes beyond my sight.
Iíve come up from the canyon to see you off until morning.
The breeze is cool, steady and colorful,
Greasewood and Mesquite dance in relief
and the Cottonwoods gather their time of rest.
I still canít believe youíre gone.
And I feel a great loss,
as though God has left for a while.
And off in the distance, the bitter sweetness of
the heaping Sierras and the pyramid they call Cerro Baludo.
I stand on the ancient ocean floor,
now relieved of its burden,
sleeping gently beneath the clean hues of September dusk.
The blues are still of the deepest seas.
Itís perfect in every way and
there is nothing here but you and me.
