Whispers On The Wind
Judith Goff

I walked alone, in the darkness
On ancient cobbled streets
Where footsteps echoed
From the still, deep shadows

Each eerie house I passed
Loomed in ghostly maleficence
As glass panes in empty windows
Stared blindly down

The city gates hung open
Beckoning me, come in,
And beyond in the haunted
City, spirits stirred

I walked on, as around me
Spectral voices swirled
In hushed, discordant sighs;
Whispers on the wind

In the corner of my eye,
Gossamer silhouettes
Played hide and seek
Shapes shifting with the breeze

Translucent visions
Hovered in the frigid air
And I wondered aloud
If I was dreaming
.
.
.

And in answer, the whispers
Vanished with the wind
