The Flower
Ashley Burdett

Some time before,
I do not remember
Quite exactly when
On a day,
So very long ago,
You and I began out love
With purest happiness.
And with our new-found grace
Came a flower,
A simple rose,
To ensure me of your love.

Yet, over time,
How has that once perfect flower wilted,
Into nothing more
Than a withered stump
Left in its vase and in my heart.
Now there remains nothing
To ensure me of your love.
For with every thought of you
Another petals falls
From the flower
And weighs heavy upon my heart.
