Shit
Randall Barfield

Ma, raised a country girl, said she didn't give a shit from time to time. Pa, raised in town, said that that was the worst-sounding word he'd ever heard, for ma to say damn if she had to say something scandalous. Ma said she'd never say the word pa just uttered, that THAT word led to hellfire and you-know-what; besides, shit was a perfectly natural and harmless word if you grew up how and where she did. It was certainly to be found or stepped in all over the farmyard. Pa said he didn't care, for ma to quit saying the word once and for all, at least when he was around. Ma said it was still a free country she'd have him to know, so she guessed she could say whatever-the-hell came to her married mind. Pa's brows rose and his head cocked. I think it was I, the offspring, who finally said why in the damn shit didn't they both drop the subject and for us all to hit the sack in order to get some much-needed shuteye. Silence, prayers then snoring ensued.
