Don't Take The A Train
Winson Thai

CHARACTERS
SHIRLEY VASQUEZ: 22-year-old railfan, dark-skinned, thin build, speaker of this monologue.

PAOLA ORTIZ: Stanleys 24-year-old distant relative, average build, light-skinned, music lover.

SCENE SET-UP
The scene happens in the living room of Paolas East Elmhurst apartment. A long couch at center stage faces the upstage wall. A big mounted HD TV on this wall plays silent clips of the A and C trains in the whole scene. To its right is the front door of the apartment and below it is a low shelf with a DVD player, cable box and four speakers wired to the TV. Each sidewall has a wood table with a vase on top. The one on the left also has a battery-powered radio that is tuned to a channel.

AT RISE
Shirley and Paola sit in front of the couch on the floor surrounded by building tools, a table, some chairs, and their severed legs. They use the tools to attach the seats and table to their limbs. After a commercial break, the radio plays Take the A Train by Duke Ellington. Paola grins, snaps her fingers, puts her tools down and dances a bit and Shirley looks at her annoyingly, putting his tools down also. She stops and looks confused at him.

SHIRLEY'S MONOLOGUE: Duke Ellington has to be spinning in his grave for telling people to ride the A train. Service-wise, it definitely does not merit a grade of an A because it sucks. Traveling to three separate lines in Queens and having the longest route of any train in the subway, albeit making it notable, leads to the A running really irregularly with a lot of bunching, gaps, or delays between trains. In Queens, waiting time is a complete nightmare, up to 15 minutes even during rush hours and on weekends, the A runs every 8-12 minutes. I find this so surprising considering it is the only service that goes to neighborhoods like Ozone Park, Howard Beach, and the Rockaways, and train intervals during those times are doubled out there. The A may have the longest express run of all the citys trains, but its cars, called R46s, are not only some of the heaviest ever built, thus really slowing it down, but dark, dull, and dirty on the inside. The A formerly used a similar car type known as R44s that I call the largest failures in New York City Transit history. When I first rode them in mid 2005, it did not take long for me to conclude they were ugly inside and out and during every ride on them afterward, something had to malfunction, from the brakes to the doors to the air-conditioning, the list goes on. I am happy they got retired in September and knew they could not last past 40 years. The only thing I like about the A is the spectacular views of Jamaica Bay it offers between Broad Channel and JFK Airport. This is why I often take its local little brother, the C even though it has gotten many complaints from riders recently, as it runs quite infrequently and uses the oldest cars in the system. Those cars, though, called R32s, are my favorite and among the strongest, lightest, and brightest, which is why the A skips the local stations in Brooklyn and Manhattan like a turtle and the C charges in like a missile. The R32s also have front and rear window views of the tracks and tunnels, which I always like. (Beat as Paola still looks confused) Look, if you did not believe anything I just said, take the A train whenever you get a chance and you will realize its problems.

"Honestly, this story sucks. I want to give constructive criticism, but you may as well re-write it from the beginning. It reads like an autistic train fanatic wrote it, and has way too much frivolous information about trains. It seems as if you just set up a scene as a platform to talk about trains, kind of weird if you ask me and doesn't make sense." -- Marie Polar.
"definitely sounds like a railfan's assessment of a train route. I should know. But I've never taken that train it just reminds me of many conversations I've heard while watching local trains in CA. :): " -- Shelley, Burkburnett, tx, usa.
