PROLOGUE:
As soon as I remembered that he wasn’t with me anymore, the pain took over. My heart felt as if a bullet had punctured a hole so big that nothing could cover it. I couldn’t concentrate on anything I did and every minute that passed by, the pain grew even bigger. The pain kept growing and growing that I didn’t care if I died right there. In fact, I started to make plans to die, commit suicide, at least I wouldn’t suffer as much in hell, as I was suffering right now. Love, that word, what I felt for him, was the word that kept me alive. Even though the word death seemed precious, I wanted to stay alive so that I could see him one last time, and then whatever strategy seemed best would be the one I would act upon to end this pain.

“You should never judge a book by the cover” My mom would always say. But I never thought it would apply to boyfriends too. I learned it the hard way through pain, heartbreak and worst of all abuse. How did I let all that happen? I call it immaturity and fear. Fear of being alone.
Immediately I fell in love for the first time in my life. He was perfect at that time, cute, intelligent, and about my age. John was in one of my classes and I couldn’t stop looking at his table, pretending I was looking for something, just to take a glance at him. Soon he understood what I was doing, and smiled when I looked at him. His smile melted my heart. He was like an angel from the heavens sent down to earth. Now it wasn’t me doing all the glancing, but him, he kept glancing at my table, and when I caught him, he blushed.
I didn’t have any friends here, I had moved in to the state and I was new. Back in California, I had many friends that I already missed. How long would it take me to make new friends? Soon enough the bell rang, announcing that lunch had begun and everyone, including John, ran out the door, eager to eat lunch. I walked down to the lunchroom and sat down, not very excited about lunch. I was a loner, sitting by myself made me look like a loser too.
“Hey!” A girl waved at me.
“Come and sit with us,” She said.
Around her, were four other girls. They were all gorgeous girls, probably my age too. I picked up my bag and sat down with them. I felt awkward since I was the only one that didn’t know anyone.
“Hey, my name is Jenny.” said the girl that had invited me to sit with the group. She was a little bit taller than me with short dark brown curly hair tied into a ponytail.
“This is Annie.” Jenny pointed at a blonde girl sitting next to her.
“Hi!” Annie said excitedly, and I replied with a less enthusiastic hi.
“This is Angela.” Angela was sitting next to me, smiling very big and just as excited as Annie, she greeted me. She was a blonde-haired person
“And this is Carla” she said pointing at a girl with black hair, not very excited to meet me, I could see.
“So what’s your name?” Angela asked.
“Martha”
“Hello Martha!” Annie said, she waved high and then dug into her food.
“Aren’t you going to eat?” Jenny asked me
“I’m not that hungry.” I replied
“So you are new huh?” Carla asked me
“Yeah” I said
“Figures. You come from Cali right?” she asked me.
“Yeah, how did you know?” I asked her
“Stupid clothes you are wearing gives you away” she snapped.
“Carla, don’t be a bitch” Jenny yelled. As soon as Jenny was done yelling at her friend, Carla grabbed her belongings and left.
“I guess your friend doesn’t like me…”
“No, I bet she is PMSing, don’t worry about it.” Angela spoke up smiling.
Before I knew it, the lunch bell rang and the classes had started again. Once again I was a loner in another one of my classrooms. However by the end of the day, Angela was in my last class. I was glad that the day was finally over and I could go home.
The days passed and my schedule changed over the days. Now I had two classes with my new friends. I was lucky enough that with time John began talking to me, not like a friend. That was the good things that happened with time, but with this other negative things came too. Carla never seemed to simmer down, and was always picking on me. I never understood why. I never did anything that could harm her in any way, and here she was always yelling at me and fighting with her friends because of my fault. Soon enough Carla didn’t sit with us anymore and the Crew, as I called my groups of friends could care less. I felt uncomfortable though, thinking that this was all my fault, but then again, Carla never gave me a reason.
As John began to flirt with me, my friends told me that John wasn’t a good idea for me. But no matter how many times they told me that he was a bad kid, I always looked forward to seeing him again. Morgan, a new friend of mine had told me about his former girlfriends and how he had always hurt them. I couldn’t believe them of course. He always treated me with respect and he didn’t seem like he would be that type of guy. Sometimes I wish I had listened to them, I could have prevented myself so much pain and regrets.
**************
The crew expanded with two new additions of good friends I had found, Mia and Morgan. Mia and I had two classes together, one with the entire crew and the other in English, while Morgan and I had only P.E together. We all sat together during lunch and ate like a family. I could picture us all together in college, sharing rooms and being best friends forever.
