Chapter 1.
14th February 2004;It was the first ever day I started using Yahoo Messenger. I was really excited as I finished downloading it, signed in and added a couple of friends who already had a Yahoo account. But none of them were online (actually, I haven't seen any of them as online because they don't use Messenger; but I didn't know it back then), so I made up my mind to check out some of the Chat Rooms. I chose the Bollywood room, mainly because I'm a die hard hindi movie fan, and entered the room, typed "joined the room" and waited.
Within seconds, new chat windows started popping up in my screen, and soon I was trying to talk to 7 people at the same time. All of them were indians and since my Yahoo ID suggests that I'm of Indian origin (even though I'm not), they wanted to get to know me. It was almost midnight, but I was genuinely happy as I chatted away amiably, experiencing for the first time in life talking with people I hardly knew and making friends instantly. All of them wanted to add me to their contacts list and I was thrilled to pieces when some of them even wished me a Happy Valentine together with an emotican of a rose. Most of them were regular users of Messenger and said that they will surely love to talk to me the following night too. I went to bed happily that night, thinking how wonderful it had been getting to know people from other countries who, even though they might not ever meet you in person, actually qualify as real life friends, keeping you in company even during the loneliest moments of life, even when you are sitting on a chair in front of the computer at midnight while the rest of your family has gone to sleep.
Little did I know that what happens the following day would change my life forever.
