A Shadow In the Corner

Chapter 2

What do you want?! Zila said with a low shy voice.

All I wanted was to talk to you. Bryce said softly.

Zila stood and faced him. She stood her ground staring at him in the eye until she went to walk away after staring his beautiful, deep blue eyes and then walked away. She started to go to her class and she had already gone up 2 flights of stairs and was going to her physics class when she realized that she had left her backpack. Zila turned around and went back to the copying room. When she arrived at the rooms door silently she saw the door was still cracked. Then she stared at it for a moment the poked her head in, and her long black hair with red streaks flowed into the room before her head. When she looked in she saw Bryce, kneeling on the ground by her backpack, she couldnt believe that she was seeing this! Bryce was kneeling on the ground by her backpack, crying? She didnt move for a moment instead she stood by the door way and listened. Why? Why would she be like this? I really thought I had a chance of being nice to her and treating her like I should, because she is beautiful and smart and absolutely wonderful! He paused for a moment to wipe his tears away in this time Zila slid down the wall and sat on the floor.

I really wished I had treated her better, she doesnt deserve to be talked to like I talked to her. She needs someone she really loves in her life and, now I know, its no longer me. Bryce paused again, to wipe his eyes.

Zila also invited this pause for now she to wanted to be able to wipe her eyes. And then he started to speak again. In my heart, I know I loved her, but I just couldnt admit it to her, like she did to me. I would hang up on her, and call her names of all sorts, and she put up with it. All that time she put up with my shitty attitude, and she loved me no matter what was on the outside of me that she knew on the inside, I was absolutely wonderful. And look how I treated her. Im a horrible person.

Zila was now crying so hard it was hard not to be heard. But Bryce still had not heard her, he had stopped speaking and Zila wanted to see what he was doing so she wiped her eyes and looked around the corer into the room but it was hard to see into the room because Bryce was standing over her. He had not yet seen her but he soon would. He was sniffing her backpack, smelling her shampoo. He went to turn and walk away to her class but she followed silently. She wanted to stop him and say something to him but she did not know what to say. Finally after a long walk thru the school Bryce was standing outside of her class. But he was not going in. It was as if he was standing there deciding whether he should face her even for just a moment to hand her the backpack. He was about to open the door when he looked down because he heard a jingle on the backpack, and a shield that was almost holding him back from the door knob. There was a piece of paper with his name on it. He opened the not and read aloud, Turn Around. Bryce did so but hesitantly as though something was going to be waiting for him to turn so it could kill him. But instead when he turned all he saw was sweet Zilas face. Her stared into her Deep Brown eyes and spoke in a raspy voice because he was crying before.

How much did you hear me saying? Bryce said with tears still in his eyes.

Well I think I heard all of it unless I missed part of it.

Im sorry, no really I am, it was so wrong of me to treat you like that Zila.

Bryce I OWWW! Oh my god ow. Bryce help me.! Zila was now on the floor with the arms wrapped around her knees pressed as tight to her body as could be. Now she was rolling on the floor clutching her stomach in pain and agony. Bryce was just watching in a state of shock. He dropped her backpack and ran into the class room screaming, Help, Help! Zila is hurt! The teacher took no notice of him and went on teaching the class. Bryce Ran back out again but not before screaming What the hell is wrong with you people!!!!?

Zila was still rolling on the floor in agony, Bryce knew he had to help her and he was the only one who could. So he pondered for only a moment in his mind a plan. He paced across the hall way and comforted Zila telling her everything was going to be o.k. and that he would take care of her. Bryce finally figured out a plan and looked down to Zila to tell her he was going to pick her up and carry her downstairs to the pay phone to call 911. When he was talking to her Zila just looked up at him with her deep brown eyes filled with tears and said softly, Bryce just remember, I always loved you. She then leaned forward and kissed his cheek softly before her voice faded and her eyes shut. But Bryce would not give up.

Bryce picked Zila up and carried her down all of the flights of stairs. He got to the entrance hall and sprinted as fast as he could with Zila in his arms. Bryce flew through the halls taking all of the short cuts and all the right turns. Finally she made it to the pay phone by the entrance doors and pulled out change from his pocket as he placed Zila Gently on the floor. Bryce picked up the phone and dialed 911 forgetting about the change but he didnt need it. A woman with a high pitched voice answered and asked what his emergency was. He told her everything that happened and what school he was at. The lady told him that and ambulance was on the way.

Bryce leaned over her staring at her paling face and kissed her cold cheek. The brushed her hair out of her face and whispered into her ear, Dont worry Zila I wont Give up on you, everything will be fine, youll see, Im going to be the first thing you see when you wake up! Youll see! Please dont let go yet Zila, Please dont let go. Bryce breathed these last words and a small tear dripped from his eye to her stone cold face.

Just then the ambulance bulled up to the school and Bryce picked Zila up once again and took her outside. The ambulance doors opened and out came the stretcher. Bryce put her on the stretcher himself because he was afraid they would harm her. Bryce attempted to jump into the back of the ambulance but the man in the back pushed him away and told him, Im sorry sir we will send word to you shortly but right now you need to stay here.

The just plainly pissed him off! I will not stand here waiting for the word from you if she dies I want to be the last person to see her, because I just woke up from a long sleep and now I know how I should have been acting! Now are you going to let her die alone or am I going to get in the back of this heap and ride with her even if the last breath she takes is in 5 minutes?

Ok son, let me get into the front and you will ride with her, but dont touch any of the equipment. The assistant jumped out of the back with a wink and signaled him to jump in. He shut the doors with a loud thump and jumped up into the front of the ambulance. And the last thing Bryce heard before the ambulance moved was Step on it Ernie!
