The Manipulatory Factor E Rocco Caldwell
Hillis was drenched in sweat when he awoke. Teresa asleep peacefully beside him seemed wrong and out of place. The chambers were nearly black except for the dying flames in the fireplace which cast an orange hue to the darkness. He stared at Teresa angry because of the peace she rested in. The voice returned inside his head screaming reproach at Teresa's sleep. She said manipulation was sometimes love, what did she know of it? How dare she even attempt to analyze what love was. She was marrying only out of duty! Hillis rose from the bed and dressed. The sickness made his stomach queasy but he was determined to get away. He turned to look at Teresa once again with her body fluttering gently. He managed a smile and left the chambers.
The corridor was emptied of guards. Only the torches burned. He had to reach the stables and obtain a horse then he could ride into the Unknown Lands. He would soon enough be forgotten he told himself reaching the railing. He managed to right himself and head down the stairs. Shields decorated both walls of helix stair rail. There were many furs scattered across the stone floor at the bottom. A guard walked slowly by with a torch in hand penning Hillis to the wall of the stair rail. The guard didn't see him continuing on. Hillis was in the foyer of the castle. The doors were directly before him. He was quiet as he opened the doors and stepped out of the castle into the cold autumn night. The icy air made him feel that much more alive. He could use the neatly trimmed hedges as cover for they extended nearly to the stables. The sky was clear full of a billons stars and the moon provided a silver light making it difficult to use the cover of darkness. He had been told that outside the palace were many soldiers placed there to protect the castle from any covert attacks. He stayed low allowing the hedges to shield him from the tower guards. There was the opening between the hedges and the stables themselves. A couple of guards stood in low conversations there. He studied the guards as his father had taught him to do. One of the guards left with a torch leaving only one. Hillis was convinced he wasn't going to kill anyone. The guard was a young man perhaps younger than Hillis and he wasn't happy about having guard duty. He never noticed the silent Hillis coil for the attack. The stables were just beyond the guard so he had to be removed. Ron-ta's voice confabulated instructions like the wind! Move unseen and unheard and feel light as the wind itself! The guard heard nothing when Hillis placed a well aimed blow to his neck dropping the guard unconscious falling into Hillis's arms. He dragged the guard behind the hedge. Nearly five minutes later Hillis was at the stables' doors.
He entered the massive structure with consternation. The horses could sense his fear or maybe it was the Black Ill still swirling in his body whatever it was the horse moved uneasily in their stalls. A lantern blazed an orange incandesce on the wall next to his head and he retrieved it elevating the pacific radiance slightly above his head.
"And the tools may be that of necessity!" the voice resounded inside his skull. He slammed his eyes as if to ward off the voice. He tried mentally to push the surging voice back down into the pit of his stomach. "The tools can be of desires!" That stopped him and he vomited as his knees were diluted of strength. He felt himself careening to his left but his free hand reached for a pole and steadied him.
"Wellward, what's happening to me?" he cried out as more vomit spewed. He rested his back against the pole. An incredible panic gushed inside him tossing him from the pole, ramming against a wall.
"They will use you! They will find your weaknesses and abuse you!" The voice shouted. The voice hurt his head! Why wouldn't it leave him alone?
"Get out of my head!" he screamed tossing the lantern across the stables dropping to his knees clutching his head with his hands. If the voice hadn't been ringing loudly inside his ears, he would have heard the horses stir about as the lantern caught the hay on fire. The horses' anxieties caused them to bellow and kick at their stalls. The fire seemed to roar into life quickly spreading to support beams and fanning out across the ceiling. The horses were mad with fear bucking about. Hillis felt the heat but didn't notice what was happening as the fire now engulfed the inside of the stables. The smoke made him realize what was occurring. It almost made him regurgitate. It stung his eyes. He was suddenly weakened by the Black Ill and couldn't react. Hillis heard the agonies of the horses as the fire burned them. Suddenly the stables' doors swung open fuming the flames which engulfed the person who had opened the doors. The person barely had time to cry out as the fire burned him alive. The sight was horrible. Then Calder leaped over the burning corpse into the stables. He quickly examined the situation seeing that a large support beam had fallen over Hillis.
"Sire," Calder cried! The stables popped, spluttered and crepitated in return. Calder looked above seeing the entire roof evaporating before his eyes in flames. Beams absorbed by an orange and red inferno fell everywhere. Calder dragged Hillis free from beneath the beam lifting him upon his shoulders and carried him out of the stables.
The night air was refreshing helping Hillis to recover his senses. Calder gently laid him down and then returned to the stables. Nothing was making any cognitive sense to Hillis as he coughed up smoke and slut. He soon heard footfalls approaching. Shouts and cries broke the serenity of the night. Teresa stood over him wearing a sheer light blue gown. She bent down and wiped his forehead.
"Help me up, please, Teresa?" Hillis asked. She lifted him with his help. The stables were a juggernaut of flames. Men pathetically tossed buckets of water on it. Hillis thought of the futility. His thoughts were his own again, the voice had left him.
"Calder is in there!" He yelled remembering Calder's heroics.
Teresa gave him a confuse stare, "In the stables?"
"Hell, yes!" Hillis pulled away from her making his way to the stables. He could barely walk without falling over. "No, Calder! Not you too!"
Men grabbed him and he tried fighting but his strength seemed to watch him hidden somewhere. The stables were only a skeleton bathing in fire. Hillis dropped to his knees and wept.
"The tools? I'll tell you the tools! Waste and apathy are the tools of manipulation. I, Hillis, son of Ron-ta is the manlipulatory factor! Elohim, forgive me, but I am!"

"This was excellent! You could really expand on this and make it a novel with some work. Second to the last sentence needs to read...I, Hillis, son of Ron-ta (am) the manlipulatory factor! Great job, E! As usual!" -- KM (Michelle).
"Thank you. This is only a segment of an actual chapter. I didn't put the entire chapter in because I didn't people would read it. The novel is actually 350 pages long and still in the development stage because I just plain haven't worked on it yet. But it is completely written. I will use your suggestion for the end. Thank you." -- e. rocco caldwell.
