Georgia Peaches E Rocco Caldwell
The drive from the state prison to his secluded brick house in the country just outside of Mobile was filled of thoughts concerning Willie and the lack of justice he received simple because he was a black man. The Alabaman evening sky was just turning orange as dusk settled at the horizon. A cool breeze labored through the maples causing a brief chatter among the leaves. Hampton parked his Ford in the driveway of his quaint three-story house. He listened to the chattering leaves as if they had something to say to him. He was an emotionally tired man and his health had suffered as much as his marriage. He didn't want to bring the case home after catching the glimpse of what it was doing to his wife in her blue eyes. He loosened his tie and slipped a cigarette between his lips. His father wanted him to let his convictions be his judge but others worried that his bright career could suffer if he didn't let the Willie Jackson case alone. The scents of roses crowded him as he stepped on the porch just inside he could hear his wife busily preparing supper. It wasn't fair for her to suffer too was all he could think letting his shoes crush out the remaining glow from the cigarette. She was aging just like him, the bad age like mold on a peach. He would make an effort not to let the case creep its way into their lives that evening. "Lora?" He called stepping inside. She raced from the dinning room and wrapped him in her arms. Her hair was up in a neat blonde ball. Her cheerleader looks was typical of a southern girl, a true Georgia peach in her own right. Her lips extra soft and filled with passion as they kissed briefly because of the past tension erected between them. "I made you fried chicken," she said after breaking the kiss. He stared into her face and found a smile from somewhere inside him. He felt he could make it that evening without the thought of Willie Jackson. "I'm hungry too!" He walked into the dinning room seeing two lit candles and the neatly prepared table. "This is nice." "Thank you. Now you sit down and I'll bring you the chicken." Her voice filtered in from the kitchen. It was his father's fault he considered as he stared at the plate and silverware placed perfectly on the dinning table. His father had fought the Klan when no one else would. He told Hampton that all men were created equal and deserved the same rights and justice under the law no matter what the status quo thought. Hampton believed that with all his heart and attended law school to make sure he kept up his father's fight. In order for America to be a true democracy, the Negro had to have equality! The smell of fried chicken straightened Hampton in his chair Lora walked out of the kitchen with a large plate of golden brown chicken the way Hampton remembered his mother used to fry. The glow in Lora's face was like the harvest moon outside in the pleasant evening sky. The dinner was actually therapeutic for a marriage on the edge of falling apart. They spoke of things done together over the past few years. Hampton found himself laughing and Lora fought back tears of happiness. Her husband had come back to her. The knight of justice smartly rode off in the sunset and now things could get back to normal. He was once again the leading candidate for a judgeship and their future was again beaming bright. She hurried back to the kitchen. "I made you something real special, Clinton," she said from the kitchen. He wondered what it was pushing the plate away. "It took me sometime to get it right but your momma helped me! I even got them from your father!" She stepped out holding a pie. Hampton smiled he had not tasted a good pie in over a year. She set it down in front of him. "It's peach pie!" Peach? His mind raced back to the face of Willie Jackson two days from hanging. The bag of peaches he brought and the injustice that placed his client there. He stood up as if wounded by the pie. It startled Lora. "What's wrong?" What's wrong? Indignation swelled up in him. What do you mean what is wrong? An innocent man about to be hanged simply because he's black! How can anyone in the state of Alabama sit down and enjoy peach pie? He tipped the table over in his rage causing Lora to scream! "How dare you! You want to keep me from seeking justice just so you can have a nice neat little life." "You're crazy!" Lora exploded! "And you're a monster if you aren't affected by the injustice that's about to happen in two days!" "Not that nigger Willie Jackson again," Lora yelled realizing too late her words! Hampton was stun briefly but managed to find a smile. Hearing her words only revealed what he always suspected. Something fragile dropped in the other room breaking into pieces. He turned and walked away. She called for him to come back but her words no longer affected him. Soon she was screaming from the veranda of the quaint house as he started up his car. She was crying when he looked back for the last time and then he never to spoke or saw her again.
Willie Jackson was hanged two days later and Clinton Hampton stopped practicing law disappearing after signing the divorce papers. The year was 1961 and America was heading right into the Vietnam conflict.

"well keep going ERC, this was different than i expected from the title for my own little reasons, but quite profound and i'm sure accurate as to what may have happened in many households back then, maybe a few even today. looking forward to more." -- Just A Guy.
"LOL at JAG! (inside joke) Rocco, this is wonderful and I really hope you keep going with it. Thats one of my biggest writing faults is that I dont like to do long works. Call me lazy hehe. This has a lot of potential. I'm sure that racial conflicts broke a lot of marriages back then, hell, even now." -- KM.
